Jim, you need look no farther than your brother to get first hand experience of the effects of our changing world. In his field (and mine as well) he went through a reduction of one third of the work force in his department in one fell swoop. Further reductions came also including eliminating entire fields. In some cases technology replaced the eliminated positions. In others the work load was pushed to other departments and in other the customers themselves were expected to pick up the slack. Not to minalimize the life and death statement but in our industry, mistakes could have cost thousands of lives in seconds.

The changes that took place were very difficult for many , including Don and I to accept. Many among us tried to continue to maintain the level of service that we had provided for years and years but in the end it was to no avail. Our perceptions as employees of the reduction in the level of efficiency of the operation is valid. Having been down the road of trying to to maintain that level of efficiency without the resources I think for Peg's mental well being she should focus on what areas the hospital is willing to reduce service. It's a giving fact that things will change...and not for the better from her perspective. It's a tough pill to swallow. Before I left It honestly took us a full 8 hour shift to accomplish what used to take us 20 minutes. Impossible to fathom for new employees but it was a fact.

Bottom line is the hospital is a business and must do what it takes to keep the doors open. Union or not really has no bearing on the matter. Those that would beat them up or sing their praises in this particular issue are really looking at it with blinders on. If the public see's fit to take their business else where because of either price or service then it's game over for all the employees.

Tell her not to worry about that which she cannot change but accept that the change will come. Either with or without her cooperation.

I could go on and on about my thoughts about the health care industry and in my mind the single biggest ponzi scheme ever invented ...insurance... and it's effects on health care costs, but I'll save that for another debate.

In reply to # 2050741 by Jim K The problem with professional nursing is women.

No truer words were ever spoken...

Wife is an ICU nurse and the stories over the years are unreal. Talk about eating your own kind, the nurse union spends more time on witch hunts than anything else. Nursing management seems more focused on sucking up to the hospital chiefs than managing the nursing staff in any positive way.

As to the nursing union, they are no better in that it is largely a female run thing. Nurses would do a lot better if they joined one of the real unions like the autowrkers or teamsters.

Thank you.

I tried to organize our hospital with IBEW local 1547. The argument was they're not "professional" and we should have gone with ANA. My argument was IBEW has a long and successful record of representing LABOR, which is what nurses really are. At the time, Local 1547 was the most powerful local union in North America.

Our complaint was strictly working conditions.

In reply to # 2050565 by gooser before this gets too wild i have to ask. is this a privately owned hospital or is it a non profit?

A catholic hospital, profit or surplus...what do you call it? It IS a private for profit institution.

Church affiliated hospitals(etc) are typically "non-profit"(but the don't pay taxes IIRC)......supposedly!!!......Back in the 90's and early 2000's there was just one hospital in this area (Houston) ......Today there are now at least 3 plus a Kelsey Sebo Clinic branch and 2 hospitals recently built in Katy.......

My point is that if hospitals are popping up there like they are here, then I'd tell her to switch hospitals..Why get your BP up.....

Jim,
You had to know when you wrote this thread that the sh$t would hit the fan. I knew that Steve Y would get wound up just as soon as Wyatt made his first comments. I am glad Gerry has not throw in his two cents or we'd really have a fire fight....

I am not a fan of organized labor but regardless, I do feel very badly for you and your wife.
Regards,
Marc

AzMarc-
You have never laid your hands on someone out of compassion or kindness; you have money to have "people" who do that for you.

You are an administrator/manager. You're the kind who would tell me how to do my job, despite the fact that you don't know the first thing about what I do (despite the fact I TOLD you what I do). You are the guy who lies to workers because we're too dumb to understand your Corporate position.

Fuck the people who make you and your stockholders rich.

Jim,
Pull your head out of your ass before you make ASSumptions. I have been a wage earner for the same Company 28 years come September. Have you kept a job half that long??? I do not manage people but I do manage product lines as a Finance Manager so I know what it takes to make a business successful.

Since you don't know shit about me, you ought to keep your pie hole shut.....
