1952 TD Project Restoration Project Begins

Greetings,

Just an update on some progress. My wife and I are hauling many body panels and assorted pieces of this project home today from San Diego up to Monterey. The tub, frame, wheels, transmission, and engine all are staying put in San Diego until we decide what to do next with those pieces. We understand this process will take time and patience (and some sanity smiling smiley

As you can see in the photo, nearly all of the body panels (including these fender arches) are in really good shape.
Kind of a nice patina to them, but I know I am going to have to do some sanding and primering to protect these pieces in the long run.

Is there a forum link describing general bodywork (sanding, primering, best quality materials to use? ) This may be a good starting point in making sure any surface rust on the panels can be sanded away and ultumately protected.

Thanks,
Cameron

Cameron,

The only way to get rid of all the rust is to have your panels hot acid dipped, which does trap a bit of acidic solution between some metal layers, but can be neutrallized with Ospho. Bead blasting works well but is quite expensive and can deform large panels if not done properly.
I took all my MG TD panels to Nor-Cal Metal Stripping in Windsor where they were dipped, washed and then epoxy primered before a layer of surface rust could form. They will spray the parts with WD40 if you don't want to pay for them to primer, but then you have to do an extensive fine oil removal before you start the paint process.

If your panels do not have lot's of rust you might be able to just surface sand them, skim coat with panel filler and then primer, etc.

Good luck with your project. There are many before you who have learned what not to do and how to set the best course for finishing your project. My best advice is to not think too much about how many hours you are going to invest in finishing your car. Just think about one small car related project at a time.

Cheers,

Ken

Thanks Ken! Those are some great words of encouragement.

I will start doing some research into acid dipping and primering locally in the Monterey Bay Area.

Funny thing is that my mother in law just discovered both rear fenders up in the rafters of the garage. I thought that we would have to search for them new/used. What a relief that was. Evidently my father in law (RIP) had squirrled away many body panels and pieces in the rafters of the garage!

Looks like I have another load of TD parts to bring up from San Diego!

All the Best,
Cameron

Ah this story sounds familiar. Picked up a 1951 TD three years ago that my father-in-law did not finish. We are wrapping up the finishing touches to debut it at the All British Car show here in Austin in Sept. Good luck and be patient; you will need it.

Look forward to seeing it in Round Rock, James! There should be a good showing of TD's again this year with a few more than there were last year.

If this car isn't inspiration for restoration projects, I don't know what is!

Al Moss' MG TC in Monterey this morning.

Cameron, I started on my 1953 MG TD restoration project last February. I am fast tracking it as I have the time right now and I am restoring it to sell at some point.

This week I buffed out the body/cockpit, Pulled the wiring harness to it's appropriate points, plumbed the fuel pump, installed the floors and transmission tunnel, mounted the steering column and installed bits and pieces to the firewall.

There is still a lot of work to do, but I think it will be complete by September 1st. We will be starting it up this week. Just remember, than any small task you do is one less task on the list.

Cheers,

Ken

Ken - Stunning work!

I have so much work ahead - it is so important to keep things in perspective and have fun at the same time.

Thanks for your words and restoration pictures for encouragement!
