Rebuilding wheel cylinders and adding fluid

Hello,

I am in the middle of rebuilding all 6 MG TD wheel cylinders and adding new brake fluid. After I have all cylinders rebuilt and mounted, how do I go about adding the fluid? Do I add it to the master cylinder until it runs out of each bleed fitting? Do I do one of them at a time? This is something I have never done before. I have installed a new master brake and clutch cylinder and am ready to add fluid. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jim Walton

With the cylinders on and the brake drums in place...wheels on or off doesn't matter. All bleed valves should be closed. Fill the master cylinder with brake fluid. Use a piece of clear plastic tubing that will fit over the bleed nipple..about 12 to 20 inches long..and let the loose end sit in a quart jar that you never want to use for anything ever again. Start with the wheel cylinder farest from the master cylinder ( right rear for left hand drive car). Have a helper push the pedal to the floor and hold it there. Crack open the bleed valve and let the fluid flow into the jar. When it stops tighten the bleed valve. Tell the helper to release the pedal and repeat the procedure again and again until you no longer see air bubbles in the fluid. Stop occasionally and top up the master cylinder...you do not want to let it run down and start pushing air through the system. Move to the left rear next, followed by the right front and then finally the left front. If using silicone brake fluid , I'd recommend you repeat the procedure after allowing the car to sit untouched for 24 hrs. All brake fluids except silicone are excellent paint removers , so be quick to wipe any up you may have spilled.

One other thing....Clutch cylinder????

Thanks LaVerne,

I do have another question, when you assemble the cylinders, do you lube the rubber pieces with brake fluid as you put them into the cylinder? If I can get the brakes done, the clutch should be easy. What is your opinion of silicone brake fluid? I have read many different opinions with many people liking it and many not.

In my opinion, only....If you are rebuilding the entire hydraulic system, you will be smart to switch over to DOT 5....You will love the fact that you will probably never again have to change fluid....It doesn't eat paint , either, so spilling it will not mess up your car.
I had a motorcycle for 27 years, and never changed the DOT 5 fluid...Just occasionally added.

Thanks Edward,

I am going to give the complete rebuild serious consideration. It has been over 10 years since I have done any real brake work on my car. It is way past time.

jim, yes, lube the internal parts with whatever brake fluid you are planning to use. i switched to silicon 10+ years ago with no issues.

i am curious as to why you mention the clutch in you brake post...is that just the next project on your list? regards, tom

Yep! I have recently replaced the ring gear on my flywheel. While this was being done, I replaced the clutch and throw-out bearing. I think the clutch hydraulics will be next.

Clutch cylinder on a TD? Is this some kind of a modification? TDs had either a cable or rod operated clutch, never a hydraulic clutch (unless you have a MGA or MGB engine and transmission in your TD).

This TD has been modified. It has an MGA engine and hydraulic clutch. I have no idea why anyone would do this but they did and I can't see changing back.

Probably to get it up to highway speed, without having to exceed terminal velocity! (LOL).
