Gas tank filler neck gasket

I have a 51 TD. When I fill the tank with gas there is always a little that splashes out from under the cap and drips down the outside of the tank when driving. It stops after I use up a gallon or so. There is a round rubber gasket on the filler neck that I'm considering replacing. Does anyone have any experience with that? Thanks.

I may be wrong, but I don't think the gasket is supposed to be rubber...I think it's a type of cork...Maybe someone has replaced it with the wrong gasket...
Another suggestion is to fill the tank with less....Cures the symptom, but not the cause.

The gasket is cork, and easily replaced. Moss supplied cork when I replaced mine. I had some "leakage" until I looked and saw that the cap seals with a firm push down when closing, since the cap actually is a friction fit on the latch.

Hope this helps.

Regardless of the gasket used, if the tank is filled to the top, fuel will be forced through the vent hole in the cap on hard cornering. The best way to cure this is to stick the nozzle all the way down into the tank and when the nozzle shuts off, don't top the tank off.

Abingdon Spares also has the cork gaskets at a reasonable price. I found that they weren't quite thick enough, and had to make a thinner cork gasket to go under the replacement to make contact with the concave piece on the inside of the cap.

I still do as Dave DuBois suggests, and haven't had any more trouble with fuel sloshing out since replacing the gasket.
