In reply to # 2103203 by Speedracer ... Rick wanted $35k for ever for the car and got very few nibbles, and I bet he probably sold it for well less than that, hopefully he got all he could get for it, he preserved in a dry place for all these years. The biggest question is WTH would you do with the car, to go back SCCA the roll cage no longer works, who intheir right mind would cut it out, to go vintage you spend big mula to get t back to where it needs to be, and even then I think there is a very small audience of us who actually even care about these cars unfortunately. ....

I spoke to Rick at some length on the prospective purchase of this car. When the price dropped to $25k and the $AUD was above parity with the $USD it presented as an extremely attractive proposition to pursue a purchase. I was even prepared to pay $1,000.oo as an 12 month option fee. I have a restoration of a concours B underway. Rick and I thought it might be best to re-open negotiations once this project was completed. That project is almost completed and I guess #11 now falls into the category of "the one that got away"

Hap's right about what would you do with this car. Reconfiguring it back to original SCCA specifications would be a mammoth task, both financially and logistically; also; in my view restoring the car back to an earlier time would "wipe out" the patina and history subsequenly acquired up until the present day ... the car is eneligible to run in vintage and uncompetitive to run modern SCCA.

What would I have done if I had been fortunate to have acquired the car ... I would have maintained the car in it's current configuration and given it a "sympathetic" restoration which would have basically been a thorough clean up and polish of all compenents and consumables; I would've replaced the "windscreen" with a genuine Huffaker lowline windscreen which I bought from Rocket Ralphie aka Ralph Zubarski a few years ago and repainted the car in silver with a blue tint to match the blue tint of the windscreen and repainted the #11 in dark navy blue ... that's it.

The car would have been kept Stateside for about 12 months before being shipped back to Australia to "retire" in the MG Racing Series http://mgracing.mgcc.com.au/default.html ... which would allow the car to run in it's current configuration.

I'll keep tabs on this car ... who knows what the future holds ... if the price is right #11 could still end up with a boxing Kangaroo logo on its' flanks.

or; I could build a whole new V8 LHD car up around Ralph's windscreen winking smiley ... but that's a whole different story

Not that I like the thought of the car leaving the states, it's cool to know if it did, it would've been respected and treated in a deserving way.

I think your approach is a fair one Gavin. Let it live on as it is ... a race car that evolved over time, so it could keep racing. It's still MGB racing royalty.

One day it will be embraced in vintage. It's absolutely crazy that it isn't already and evidence of a key flaw in today's vintage racing scene.

You're never going to see coil over and dry sump MGBs in traditional vintage race classes, hell 20 years ago, they didn't even want MGBs in vintage racing, However there are alredy efforts in some vintage cicrle to see some post 72 era cars on slicks racing at selected vintage events in their own class.

I think if you on the outside looking in at vintage racing, people don't get how strict it can be, I just had to lobby with the tech man at VIR's Gold Cup to have my car run in it normal class with it's Nitto Nt-01 tires, much less areo devices smiling smiley And this did not make me mad, I appreciate he is allowing me to run with these tires. You could run #11 car, as is, at some vintage races right now, but not in normal MGB class, the spring Road America race and the Mitty are two that comes to mind, and you could probably even go to some more traditional vintage races with this car, they will just stick you another class/group, more than likely with more modern big bore stuff.

May-be smiling smiley It would be nice to race with Fred Sr. sooner, rather than later.

Just back from looking at the 41 car. Photos make the car look much better than it really is. Showing years of track wear and paddock repairs. Very beat and very tired.
