Hi Steve,

Huffaker did go deep into pro racing for many, many years so the misconception was that they no longer worked on British cars. They also do complete restorations and currently have two Genies getting ground up restos. It hasn't hurt their business that Ed and myself do pretty well in MGAs. Like they say, "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday."

Nice Tiger. Parents (Mom and Dad have a running disagreement on whose it is) have a Series IV Alpine... sweet car. Much more refined to drive than the MG but somewhat "disconnected" from the elements in comparision with the MG (any MG).

Some where I saw a picture of their shop with an older gentleman working on one of the Genie restorations. The square jaw and close cropped brush cut hair led me to believe it might be Joe Sr?

I have no idea what your talking about!? thumbs up Honestly... to do the job right we really had to take the car down to metal and I don't think we will go the extra mile of removing lead. This is after all a vintage racer and the cars is surprisingly light.

Scott, removing lead is easy and worth 10# on a roadster. Probably more on a BGT and some of that lead is located on the roof. Just a torch to melt the lead and a wire brush to sweep it off onto the floor. It's easy to see once all the paint is blasted off. In for a dime, in for a dollar. Ask Joe.

Scott, cool deal, blasting one like that is the way to go, the blaster can get in all the nook s and crainnies, I did the #9 car the same way, and painted as well that way.

Scott are you going with Joe's signature interior look the dove grey and the zilatone spaltter paint floors? I always like the wayt they did this, everything is the dove grey, except the floor boards which are the zilatone spaltter greytone, even the jams are dove grey, so if you ever wanted to change the car color, you just paint the exterior, I always thought that was a clever way to do, I did two cars, other than #9 that way, I liked it so much. Joe shared the paint codes with me, the grey he uses is very nice, it have a fair amount of blue to it, more so than other dove greys. What is the exterior color going to be?

HI Hap - Nice! Huffaker Silver (same as the 9 mgb - just happens to be a Porsche color but don't tell Senior!) Orange front valance as a nod to my bothers orange 66 mgb roadster. Not sure about the interior yet. Most likely same as the exterior.

Yep, thats a nice silver, Joe gave me the paint code, so we would be correct. Scott go look at Joe's midget for insperation on the silve and the zilatone floors, not sure he did the zilatone to the Midget, but it's a absolutely gourgous look. Herer's some picture of the grey and zilatone, everything is pretty true to how Huffaker did it, just a few change, like Eddie's seat, fire system, and accusump, I even source new Carter fuel pumps like they used, every hose in the engine bay is still routed just like they did it. Another noice touch was alot of the supsension was yelow zince pated , this held up very well over a 25+ year span, almost good enough to not replate, but we still replate everything they plated, I always wanted to build another car doing all these things to.

Not to hijack, but while we continue to enjoy Scott's journey, is the Huffaker car still with Eddie?

Yep, as far as I know.

The grey interior is probably one of the things that has been most copied from Huffaker race cars, you see it alot on race cars. The zilatone, which I don't have good picture of, is beyond belief how good it looks, plus it covers boo-boos very well, it was a tough paint job, I started by painting the zilatone, since it was the least amount of paint, then mask it, and paint the grey on chassis, then mask the grey and painted the silver on exterior, painted all the exterior panels separately. They were some black anodized aluminum panels, one on the front engine shelf, some inlaid in the rear cockpit wall and few other places, that was the only thing I didn't duplicate, I fiquire satin black powdercoating would be tougher and last longer, also anything thing that bolted on the car that was black originally was satin black powdercoated as well, including the entire rear end housing. I had a buddy who does satin black powder coating for GE, so I could slip in with that stuff and get it done, although to get the rear housing stripped and blasted was a chore, I took it to another buddy, who has industrial size bead blasting cabinet that restores train trucks units, he also ultrasonic cleaned the entire housing after blasting in preparation for the powdercoating. I fiquire everything Huffaker had did had lasted so well over 25+ years, that I would take the same approach. The paint was the exact same code as Huffaker gave me, but now we have more modern paint, so I sued Dupont semichrome base clear coat on the exterior, the interior was poly enamel with harder.

GT update - the entire car has been seam welded and now the roll cage fabrication work is in progress - found the correct rear end locally so Joe could do his magic. Only once very small patch panel was required on right side dogleg. Car is in amazing great condition. Photos to follow.
