Hey guys, I just got back from an absolutely fabulous weekend racing at Hallett. Turnout seemed a bit low, but this event has suffered from rain and snow for the past couple of years, so I'm guessing some racers were a bit leery of bad weather.

This was my first weekend on the Nitto NT01's and I thought they were great. I did some suspension work between the last event and this one, so I can't compare the tires straight across the board, but I found them to be nice and sticky, yet forgiving when I went in too hot and needed to slide the car a bit. The 914's I was racing with were running the Kumho V710's, and I don't think I was giving anything up in the handling department.

Speaking of changes, I lowered the car 2 inches in the rear with reverse eye springs, minus one leaf, and installed the solid rear bushings as recommended by Dave Headley. This allowed me to remove the Panhard bar that came on the car and was not very well designed. I did get a tiny bit of rubbing, but I was pushing the car very hard, and a bit of 12 ton bottle jack should fix my problem.

I dropped the front end with a set of dropped spindles, replaced the cut down GT springs with some 600 lb. springs, and added the negative camber lower a-arms. With the toe set to 1/16 to 1/8 in toe out, turn-in was super quick, but not uncomfortable once I got used to the new handling.

I ran a 4.55 welded gear this time instead of the 4.30 I usually run and that seemed to help in most places with corner exits. The 7200 RPM chip was almost perfect, I only bumped it going into one corner (turn 7) consistently, and if I shifted into 3rd for turn 1, I would be near the limit and need to shift going up the hill. I still don't have enough HP for the 2 liter Porches or those screaming Spridgets, so I'll take any suggestions I can get. All in all, a great weekend was had by all.

P.S. Got another ride in the Formula Ford, what a blast!

P.P.S. I think I blew a head gasket trying to catch those super fast Midgets and Porches.

Sounds like you had a great weekend, good to hear the Nittos did well.

Hap's, we will want a Nitto Report after this weekend; along with the rest of the Prairie Home Companion narrative report that we all expect and want.

John gave me good advice on the Nittos, so I try what he was doing as for pressures, we plan on taking hot pressures and temps every session, I've got a full crew ( thanks crewthumbs up ), so we should get some good data hopefully, and I'll gladly share our findings. One tip John already gave me was tread wear on the right side, and wishing he had rotated during thre weekend, so I think I will try this, leaving the tires on one side for practice and qualifying and then X rotating for the races, I talked to alot of guys abvout this that race on radials in other classes of racing, it tends to be common thing. The Nitto are sided , but not directional, I know guys who say that with the radial tires like RA1s, they even X rotate them even though they are directional, they say after a few heat cycle direction has no bearing, but this is not issue with the NT-O1s anyway. WE x-rotated the slicks in SCCA.

John,

What kind of lap times are the Spridgets (e.g. Herb) turning at Hallett these days?

Jay McClanahan ran a 1:32.593 in the first race on Saturday in a '72 Midget. There were a couple of very fast Bugeyes in the mix running 1:32 and 1:33 laps as well. The 2 liter EP Porsches were running in the 1:33 to 1:34 range. The best I could muster was a 1:34.8. All of the acceleration zones are uphill and I don't have the correct gearset in the transmission. I'm either at the top of one gear or the bottom of the next, never in the sweet spot coming out of a turn. It's killing me, but I need a CR transmissionangry smiley
