I'm planning on relocating to Northern California (Redding to be exact). How are the tracks and groups that race at them? My closest 2 tracks will be Thunderhill and Infineon. I am used to racing with a group here in NM that focuses on track time, and sound competition. I was worried when I read that on particular vintage race group out there will only allow points distributors. I hope its just a misconception that the some of the racing there is simply a fast moving car show.

HMSA and CSRG are the main two organizations that run at Sears Point and Thunderhill. HMSA also uses Laguna Seca. The only thing that they have been checking lately is for roller rockers, the tires on your entry form are the tires that you grid with and the usual safety items. I've seen lots of non-point distrubitors in use. Also bias ply tires are the norm for MGb racers, Hoosier TD.

WP, do these groups prohibit just roller tip rockers or all alternate rockers? The FAB-TEK rockers that I offer have plain tips but pivot on needle bearings. smileys with beer

I believe it is just roller tipped rockers. Most tech inspectors will just look through the oil cap on our cars, but on some cars they have the cover pulled to inspect and then seal it. If you have to adjust something in the valve train you must get reinspected. Aluminum heads are also out, unless it is a HRG/Darrington cross flow and even then they question that. All the small block Chevy guys are out of luck with that!
A friend runs a 2 stroke Saab Sedan and they wanted to check him for rollers! Funny expression on the inspectors face when he saw the motor.

As mentioned, CSRG and HMSA run at Sears Point and Thunderhill. Make sure you register for CSRGs Charity Challenge this fall. As far as the competition, come judge for yourself. thumbs up

Welcome to California

CSRG is probably be your best choice, CSRGRACING.ORG, based in San Francisco bay area.
They run only Thunderhill and Infineon.

We will be racing at CSRG Thunderhill event on May 26, 27, look us up, Red MGA #80
Thunderhill is just off I-5 at Willows.

For the MGB, the big no-no is roller rockers and fender flares and probably Webers.
I suggest you give Butch Gilbert a call (209) 894-3949

My MGA has NEVER been checked for roller rockers (which I dont have), to my knowledge no-one has ever even taken off my oil filler cap. I note that a generator is required by the rules, but I ran without one for a few years, now I use tiny Nippon Denso alternator, (2 drivers and total loss electrics don't work).

CSRG tire choice is not very fussy, I am currently running Hoosier Speedsters. I have in the past run Hoosier Street TD and even Yokohama 008, BF Goodrich Comp T/A.
Crank fire and dry sump are no-no, but Mallory distributor is OK.
I have run Pertronix and a MSD rev limiter for years.
Generally the cut-off year is 1967 and is supposed to follow the 1967 SCCA GCR.

The other club choice would be HMSA.
They run Laguna Seca, Infineon and Fernley (Nevada)
They tend to be much more fussy, for example they have in the past complained that among other things my aftermarket seat did not look vintage, my AC Delco alternator was not acceptable and even that brake ducts in my front valence were not correct.

There are many other clubs run race weekends and track days at Thunderhill and Infineon including
SCCA vintage
NASA
Hooked on Driving
NCRC
Green Flag racing
Shelby owners club
BMW, Mazda, Ferrari, Lotus etc owners clubs
and many more

If you are passionate about driving up and down I-5 for hours on end, there is also Buttonwillow near Bakersfield, another SCCA owned track in an area so flat, I swear you can see the curvature of the earth !

Thanks for the great info, but whats the issue with roller rockers? I can see the point of not allowing alloy heads or crossflow heads, but roller rockers? Are roller rockers going to give me an unfair advantage over an independent suspension Datsun 510 with an L20 engine(and 5 speed trans) in the same class? Vintage race groups are funny in that way; at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix I was in the same class as an MGB with an aluminum crossflow head and twin 45 Weber DCOEs, but in Colorado the tech people were debating the legality of my HS6s.

Couldn't agree with you more regarding RR. CSRG cars are required to built to 1976 SCCA GCRs. Its that simple. Our groups typically run with short wheel base Ferraris, drum brake Corvettes, Alfas, Porsches, Elvas etc. Sears Point, Laguna and ThunderHill are all very technical tracks that give a well balanced MG quite an advantage. Looking forward to meeting you.
