When to replace caliper and master cyl seals

Hi All

I just discovered that my front pads were dragging badly, so I replaced the caliper seals, now all's well.
In future, I would like to do this before I notice a problem.
Does anyone use a rule of thumb for how often to replace caliper, wheel cylinder and master cylinder seals?
I use DOT 4.

Cheers
Malcolm

Hi

Is this for a race car?

We always rebuild the brakes each year, but inspect them after each meeting and rebuild more frequently as needed, we also use DOT 5 motorsport brake fluid.

I should have added that this is a vintage race MGA, running about 6 race weekends per year.

It really comes down to how hard you run your car and how old your parts are. We R+R ours at the end of each season. We go through 2/3 sets of pads and rotors per 6 races. My drums are 7 years old and replace the shoes every 2 years just to keep them fresh.

Hi Scott + gang
I run the car as hard as I jolly well can!

I go thru pads (MGC style) about the same rate, but I am surprised that you replace rotors every 6 races?
My drums must be decades old by now, the linings are also not very fresh, but with the brake balance I use, they don't seem to work that hard.

On your annual R&R, do you replace all caliper seals, master cylinder seals and wheel cylinder seals?

How many races do you estimate each year?
By races, do you mean race weekends, which for CRSG amounts to 80 minutes track time per weekend.

We've tried many different pad compounds, some of which distroyed rotors in one weekend. Finding the happy balance of pad and driving technique, car balance etc is going to be a bit different for each individual, even it the same car. We battled braking issues in our cars for years, finally we tried the Poterfield pad/shoes and found these to be perfect for us. Rotors are cheap so we change them annually. You should be getting some bite out of your rear brakes... We adjust them after our first session of the weekend and prior to the Sunday race. At Lagua Seca however, I find they need attention after 2 sessions.

R&R - Master and calipers every 3 or so years - rebuild. We have more recent problems with wheel cylinders... if one begins to give us problems, we change them all.

6 race weekends that includes a Friday test day = 3-3.5 hours
3 test days mid week - each day is easily 6 sessions (2 hours)
