After driving the car, I realized that the seating position wasn't comfortable and moving the pedals is not an option, which leaves moving the roll cage back-how hard could that be? I moved the cage back and there were some side benefits like the fuel filler hose is now straight and the tubes that run over the doors no longer hit my head with a helmet on. Here are some before pictures:

And after:

Do you have a home to go to? If yes, how often do you go there?

I worked on the car for about 3 hours yesterday (cutting the cage) and 3 hours today (welding it back in), which is typical. The track opens at noon so I go in the morning and work on my race car until customers come in. I probably total 15-20 hours a week on it, which I think is less than if I had the car at home and worked on it all weekend. I just work really fast winking smiley

Cool, I would be happy to show you the car. The track is Speedworld Indoor Kart Track, 575 C Berry street. The phone number is 774-5278. It's only a couple blocks from the airport if you are flying in. I am generally here in the afternoons and if you PM me, I'll send you my cell number.

I put hood pins on the car and drove it for the first time with the hood and fenders on-my goodness, that hood seems to go on forever. Here's a few pics:

Ya know, while I am sure you are going to make her all pretty and bright, I am kinda liking the ghetto look that the car has going.

And yes, you do work fast. Your time from thought to completion is immediate from what I can tell. I tend to mull over this stuff before acting.

Can't wait to see how it fares on its first outing. Do you figure that running a go-cart track adds to your skill levels? Or do you even bother anymore with the carts?

I kind of like the look it has too. Add some universal black rubber 4x4 fender flares, and paint some numbers on the doors freehand with a paint brush and you're good to go. Of course, you'll need some sort of cone guard up front.

I visualize and ponder most things for quite a while before I actually start work, and I think that's why I can do it quickly. I don't just visualize the part, I picture the building of the part. Running the karts is absolutely better for keeping skills sharp and I get in 15-20 laps a day. Every spring I completely dominate the auto-x competition locally because I raced all season. We have a local guy who is going to be racing Formula Renault this year and he comes out and does three or four 15 minute stints to get in shape. Of course this is on my track, which is much harder and much faster than most indoor tracks you can go to.

Hey Mark, love the build so far. I've been following since the beginning...

Since your a kart fan, I have to ask: I know they're different karts, but have you heard of this?

ROCK ISLAND GRAND PRIX

I'm a board member and have been volunteering for the past 6 years. I've attended most of them as well. The website is a bit cheesy, but we're working on that as we speak. I'm interested to hear your thoughts. Great work once again!

I had not heard of it but I did attend the 2009 SKUSA event in Las Vegas as Michael Schumachers mechanic (long story). Here's a couple of videos in the pits and walking with Schumacher.

I should get out of car racing and get into kart racing-I'm really good at it and it's cheaper

Yeah - karting and F1.

This was my friend's experience with his son "racing" Mark Webber (and Australia's next potential F1 Champion, Daniel Ricciardo, just before Christmas.

Looked like fun.

Mark,
GREAT car... It's radical without being radically expensive. To give enough room for all the good noise it will make it seems like a road course would be best.

I've never been one for Yahoo groups, but now that I noticed your mention of the D/E Mod group, I've requested to join... I can't wait long enough to look over the posts there though, it seems, so I'll ask you this question. I thought E modified displacement limits were 3200cc for OHC and 4500 cc for pushrod engines (page 224 of the 2010 SCCA Solo Rules). My assumption was that any car over those limits would be in A Modified... Am I confused or am I misreading the rulebook?

Dean

Thanks, although it has cost a lot more than I had anticipated, I'm into 5 figures now. The Yahoo discussion group is cumbersome to navigate but there's lots of good info there. My 2011 EMod rules (page 229)say that cars with Piston engines up to and including 3200 OHC have minimum weight of 1700 lbs. Piston engines up and including 4500 cc pushrod/OHV have minimum weight of 1700 lbs and Piston engines of unlimited displacement have a minimum weight of 1800 lbs. I fall into the "Unlimited displacement" category.

Wow - I completely missed that line that covers unlimited displacement... I just rechecked the 2010 rules & It's there as well. Thank you.

I bought a really rough (should probably be described as roughusty) '70 MGB-GT a few weeks ago & I'm trying to decide what to do with it. Being eligible for E Mod would be a good idea, even if I don't go all-out towards trying to be competitive. I'm very happy to be straightened out on the rule book. I don't think anything I would come up with would be the crowd favorite that your car will be (assuming an autocross with a "crowd" present smiling smiley), but now I know enough that I won't rule out larger displacement options.

Anything will fit if you have the desire, but have you thought about putting a more modern turbo 4 cylinder in there? You could easily get 350 hp and wouldn't have to cut out any sheet metal. Shoot, you could find a wrecked Porsche 944 Turbo and put that killer engine in it for cheap. One sold at the auction locally for $1200 and the engine and trans were healthy. There was also a sideswiped S2000 that went for similar dollars. I like EMod because almost anything goes and you don't have to spend $10,000 on wings to be competitive (cough BMod cough).

All these big numbers... and I am now aiming for 120 RWHP!

Although, if you could shoehorn this into your car...

Funny you should mention that... I have a complete swap package with drive train to the rear hubs, with front and rear uprights and brakes, from a 2.4L (NA) 2007 Solstice. To be really competitive in E Mod it seems like a smaller car with no roof would be best, but I have a suspension design that I want to try out that would put the car in a modified class anyway if I ever want to autocross. What I think I may take on is the challenge of making the car reasonably streetable, reasonably competitive in E-Mod and a good track day car too. Living in the rainy Pacific NW maybe having the B-GT top (which I've always liked the looks of) makes some sense. Thanks for the ideas, all within the thread for your car. I realize that some will say "pipe dream not challenge" when it comes to a multipurpose car... If it wasn't considered to be a pipe dream then it wouldn't be a challenge to achieve. I won't be developing and building at your rate. I can't even start until maybe June, and there's a motorcycle project that will come first. Good luck with this season's autocrossing. I'll join the crowd waiting to see video (with no music other than engine music smiling smiley) of your car out on a course.

It's short but I drifted the car around the track for a lap:
