Seen the odd pic here on how some of you have had an exhaust built for your V6 conversion, finding it tough to find many pics though.

So show us your pipes especially if it is of the underside with it installed. Looking for ideas to use when the time comes.

1973 MGB, restoration while maintaining drivability

I own an MG............Lots of fun and frustration........Just can't beat it.

Here's how the pipes pass through that transverse rail under the floor.

I'm on the second exhaust system and I haven't even started the engine. The first picture is the dual system. I replaced that with a single 3" system that sits up inside the tunnel so there is nothing hanging down below the pinch weld. A couple areas required making ovalized pipes to maintain the ground clearance.

2 1/2" to the junction then 3" the rest of the way back.

Thanks guys. If there's anything in particular you want a picture of, I've probably got it somewhere.

Mine's all 2.5", and that's for an approximately 400 hp engine. The fuel tank was centered to give clearance for both mufflers. There are "vortex cones" welded inside the collectors in the headers to drop a few dB. The goal was to make a nice, umm, GT for long trips so I didn't want too much volume. The car's actually a bit too quiet from outside, I'm going to install some cutouts because I'm an immature child.

Do you feel that the Vortex Cones made a significant difference?

I've seen them put in place temporarily at the track, but never permanently used on a street car. They seem like a terrific way of reducing the sound levels without resorting to additional resonators and the like.

I cut up a pair of OEM tubular manifolds from a Ford 3.8l V6, and combined the curves I needed with sections of the OEM Fiero y-pipe (same diameter on the down pipes), to create what I needed for the MGA:

Hard to say. They're welded into the collectors so I can't really do a before/after. I figured it wouldn't hurt.

Duncan, it doesn't look like you reworked the Fiero crossover much. Are you aware that it contains a huge restriction in it that causes significant power loss in the Fieros? They went cheap when they created these parts and they neck down a lot, just as the stock Fiero exhaust manifolds do (you can get a bout 8 BHP increase by spending an hour with a grinder on the manifolds!)

If you didn't get inside that thing, it might be a nice winter project - cut it open and 'optimize' it.

PS - we must be due for a Squamish run - maybe we can get some of the locals together in a week or two.

On exhausts for the V6, I went single (space is more restricted on the MGA than MGB and there is no big pay off in terms of power by going to a dual system on the V6. A single 2.5" exhaust is adequate for the iron head 3.4 engines.

PS - if you do go dual on the V6 a crossover connection between the banks makes a significant difference (improvement) in sound, aside from any power considerations.

Bill, I have not reworked the "y" section of the crossover. Is this where the restriction is?

I have hogged out one manifold, but didn't have the time to do the second before assembling the car. That's on "The List!"

And as to a Squamish run, I'm looking for a reason to drive the car! It has brand new tires on it, and I just found several serious issues with the cooling system (now resolved) that need testing. I have two vacations planned this month though, so timing might be tight.

Yup, they didn't cut away enough of the pipe in the Y. Take a look next time you have it out. And a friend with a rotary bit on a milling machine makes the manifold clean up a trivial job....

Let's set up something for Squamish in late Aug or early Sept.!

Has anyone run into a low RPM drone with their exhaust set-up?

I never gave it any thought at all until I had to fab up an exhaust for my "donor" Mustang. Just did a quick dual set-up with a randomly placed cross over pipe and it was HORRIBLE below 2,500.

Just wondering before I begin planning out the exhaust for the MGA. I want to run the pipes out of the headers, then a crossover, two close pipes rearward eventually merging in a single pipe and out to tip. Hopefully looking totally stock from outside. A little sacrifice in power, but the 5.0 has plenty to spare. I wasn't the least concerned about a drone until I experienced one. Just TERRIBLE for low speed cruising around.

Sure could use some help.
