Okay this is getting ridiculous.

I swapped out the Buick distributor for the rebuilt rover one with the proper ignition module. Now the car happily putters along under 2000 rpm which it would not do before. HOWEVER, the damn thing won't idle without stalling! It idled fine before albeit a bit high (1000-1100 rpm). Now it will sometimes briefly idle at 1000 rpm, other times at about 700 rpm before stalling. It runs well on the highway but up a steep hill tonight it started missing heavily for no apparent reason before it started running well again. I guess I will adjust the base idle again just in case the new distributor doesn't like where the Buick distributor liked it. I will also go through the unplug-replug procedure with the stepper motor.

If that doesn't work this whole 14CUX system is going in the garbage and I will install the megasquit system this winter when the MG bank account is replenished

So irritating!!!

Chris, it's not the 14CUX that's causing the problems. The problems from the two distributors are different, which indicates that the problems are with the distributors! If the problems were with a component you did not change, then the problems would be the same. Ergo ipso facto dominos in Montego, your 14CUX is not the problem.

Ask Simon if you can borrow his ignition module. And tell Jeff Schlemmer how things have changed since swapping out HIS unit - he'll want to know, and may have some advice!

Your current idling issue is similar to what I had and chased by swapping ignition components. When the ignition module was swapped for a Lucas unit, it seemed to solve the problem but the car has always taken a bit longer to start.

I've got an aftermarket module from Jeff that I keep as a spare and also have a remote module kit that moves the module off the distributor to the inner fender away from heat.

One of these days I'll install the remote kit. You're welcome to the spare module if you want to try it. Unfortunately, the first one Jeff sent me failed after 600 kms but right up to that point, it worked fine. Starts were actually better than the Lucas but the Lucas has staying power.

Chris, Im running into idle issues also only mine is it wont idle and stay running well until it warms. What is the plug unplug proceedure for the stepper? Ive already messed with the base idle.

Thanks for the input guys. It could be the ignition module as you suggested. Pretty damn frustrating though because I would just like to drive it instead of chasing gremlins - that's what winter is for!

Randy, I meant to say the procedure to replace the stepper but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to give it a go with the original. Unplug stepper, turn on ignition, wait 10 seconds, turn off ignition, plug back in, turn on ignition, wait 10 seconds...do this three times).

Chris,

Remind us again what exactly that procedure does for the ignition system.

There is a fine solution your MGB it is totally electronic,it is the 123ignition developed in the Netherlands.
please read this website: http://www.123ignition.nl/

This will help you for sure.

Simon, I was just grasping at straws. Before when I had the idle issue I did the plug-unplug procedure a couple of times. It might have been something else but the car eventually idled well.

The ebay seller says that the coil I am using might have too much resistance. It is a 1.5 as per Jeff Schlemmer's recommendation. The seller says I should get a 1 ohm. Can anyone comment on this? I don't want to start throwing parts at this willy nilly.

Did Jeff recommend the 1.5 based on your Buick distributor or this new Rover unit? How knowledgeable is the seller of the Rover unit? I'd lean towards what he says as I'm assuming he knows the requirements of his product.

Too bad you can't get your car down here. I'm sure the guys at Rovalution (formally Rover-Tech) could sort out some things.

I think Jeff recommended it for the buick distributor and I assumed it would work for this one. Maybe that isn't the case. The ebay seller seems to know these engines quite well but I have also asked Mark Thompson about this. I am also going to throw a PM at Glenn Towery.

Will be interested to hear what those guys come back with.

Hopefully you won't get three different opinions and then still have to decide what to do. If two guys agree on the best course of action........go with that plan. smiling smiley

$130 for a coil seems a bit steep...

If it solves your issues, money well spent. winking smiley

Doesn't say what the ohm rating is. Is this the 1-ohm coil your distributor seller was talking about?
