Issue with motor running hot

I've been working to get my car on the road. It runs great, but I have been having problems with high temps (cooling sys)
After some great advice ( Glen Towery and Leon Zak) I ordered a new thermostat (160 deg) . I drained the coolant and found this in my new raditor.
Looks like I have some flushing to do

I think all this crud was hiding in the motor. Its been siting for a long time.

I drove it for about 18 miles and everything was OK. Then I think with the hot coolant run thru the motor , the crud loosened up and the temp started rising

What are you getting when you say "high temps"? Are you basing the readings on your temperature gauge or using an infrared thermometer?

From all I have read these engines like to run around 190-200F. I have a 180F thermostat in mine and it works well.

Back to my commment about the head gasket. All that crud looks like oil/water emulsion, or is it just fooling me in the photo? If it is oil then where did it come from. I would be concerned for my motor if I saw that in my new rad thats for sure.

No oil in there, I,m pretty sure it just previous junk that just let loose. The temp was in the normal range on the gauge for 18 miles, then it started climbing to the high mark.

Do you know what your temp gauge is actually reading in Fahrenheit? N on my smiths gauge is 160F. Just below the solid line near the H is about 190 where these engines like to run. Mine never goes above that.

The previous owner on my V6 MGB got frustrated with the whole project over the car running hot. Nothing he did seemed to help. When I bought it, I started checking things and the gauge wasn't indicating properly. It ran right up to the "hot" indicator. I stuck my wife's food thermometer between the fins of the radiator and it indicated 175 degrees (not scientific, but close enough for government work). I replaced the electric Smiths gauge with a mechanical Autometer gauge and it now runs "cooler".

Make sure you are barking up the right tree.

If you are still getting debris after you flush it out you can build a zoo gun, take a piece of tubing the size of the rad hose, braze a washer on the end with a female garden hose end on it, then a fitting in the side for an air hose to attatch with a ball valve. Pull the thermostat out and hook this up to the upper radiator hose to blast through the engine backwards, turn the water on and once the system is full of water hit the air to it then repeat till it comes out clear. Dont use this on plastic tanked radiators as I have blown a tank off before LOL.

I flushed the radiator and the block. I think I removed all the gunk. I ran it up to temp, the fan turned on and then off.
Going for a ride shortly hopefully it all set.

I went for drive today (about 40 miles 90 deg outside). the stock gauge went up to just before the H and didnt go any higher.
I will consider this normal and go with it

Scott get rid of the stock gauge. For your year dash, Auto meter has gauges that fit and look like original. They also read in degrees,not C-N-H. I think it is important to know how hot is hot.

Interesting Scott. That's where mine sits in warm weather as well. As long as the fan is coming on it sounds like things are okay. I think I will eventually get a gauge with actual temperature increments on it to put my mind at ease!

I agree, I would much rather know the actual temp. Is the auto meter elect or mechanical?

I'm always a fan of mechanical gauges. The full 270 degree needle sweep is a lot more informative than the 90 degree sweep you get on an electrical gauge.
