T-5 WC or non-WC

How much do I really lose by having a non-WC transmission?

I'm having a lot of trouble locating a T-5 WC from a GM V-8. I'm finding enough non-WC in the $650 price range, but no WC's. I've run car-part.com and Hollander (myparts.com) dry with no results. Folks won't look for the tag, the tag is gone, or they can't read it are answers I get.

How much or what do I sacrifice by using a non-WC box?

TIA
Tom

Run what you can find! You can not get enough tire under the B to hurt the non W/C trans. I would get the tag #s or I would leave it, not the right gear ratio it is not worth a thing. I would rather have the tag # than it being the W/C. I have 3 T-5s with the tags & only one is W/C. & no worry at all, will use them all.

I agree with Rick. The non-WC are designed to push cars(and trucks) much heavier than an MGB.

Run what you find.

A NWC is a nice box. A WC is barely differentiated in feel and we are pushing no weight and your not racing for top place in a really competitive class and and and............

Can't speak to the power you're putting to the Chevy version of the T-5 but I've run both WC and non-WC T-5s in back of several SBFs and unless you're really gear slamming, I think you'll be hard pressed to break one. That said, the u-joints are another question. Now, those I've broken.

We build new shafts with larger Universal joints than stock for any T5 to GM rear axle combo. Tested, we have found you will most likely break the rear axle before the propshaft. winking smiley

Also the NWC has a poor reputation undeservedly. If you get one that has a lot of endplay you can shim up the front bearing. Lots have the wrong lube in them(ATF instead of 70wt). The WC use ATF. NWC uses solid bushings,WC use roller bearings. I couldn't find 70wt so used to mix 2 qts 90wt Redline synthetic with 1 qt synthetic ATF. Worked fine. Later I used 1qt Redline synthetic 90wt and 2 qt Syncromesh. Again worked fine. The most important thing to me is having stops for the shifter so you don't bend the shift forks. Also the steel front bearing retainer.

As per Glenn T.

Keep in mind that the MGB is much lighter than a Camaro. A NWC are cheap and a good choice for a swap.
Yes if you find a good WC trans go for it, also the WC trans is a bit more expensive to rebuild.

I have a NWC trans in my B, the trans had over 150k miles and still shifting good after 7 years.
I did shim the input shaft bearing to take out the end play and re-seal the trans with new front and rear seal.

You should be able to find 4 cylinder ford boxes for way less than $650 used...rebuild kits are around 200 and thats with all the parts, if memory serves me correctly the WC boxes has needle bearings in many places instead of bonze bearings. Main difference externally between ford and GM boxes is shifter location. But there are a few companies that make shifter relocation kits for em. Easy box to build, rebuild and upgrade

4 cylinder Ford has a longer input and lower first gear ratio. Newer Mustang V6 WC (still fairly common) has better ratios and D&D has the spacer for longer input. Ford pattern was used on 3.4 bellhousing. I think the V6 has same spline count as Ford V8. You would need smaller Turbo4 clutch disc. Chevy front bearing retainer and throwout bearing for small GM V6. Ford trans yoke.
