Just closed a deal on a 06 Malibu 3500- 60K $349, very clean. 3 things I would like to get clarity on at the moment.

Is the CW vs CCW timing cover/ water pump difference relevant? Do I need one NOT the other?

In relation to the above, do I need to have the AC bracket mounted so that my water pump spins the right way, assuming there is a right way? (See above)

Could this FI be return-less? I read somewhere that modern FI can be return-less. If it is , how do it do it?

Did you score the whole engine ( harness,ecu, alternator, starter, injectors ) or just the block?

All I have to add is that I don't think you even need the AC bracket

Just the block, with intake/exhaust, injectors etc. This was from a wrecker, and I don't know if you can get any of the ancillaries that way. Theyd be "extras" anyway. Going megasquirt so no need for the ECU or harness. Alternator would need to be replaced as I understand, so that leaves the starter.

I never got the exact answer if both can be used, the CCW cover is more common since it was used on all RWD versions of the 60degree family. The CW cover I believe only came on early 2.8 motors and are of course harder to find.

Looking at the kits sold for both versions, it looked like the CW unit would be less expensive for under drive pulleys to get more hp. Not sure mechanically if one is better then the other.

Scott has a mount he builds to keep the CCW version cost down, but it has a small contact patch on the water-pump pulley which may or may not be of concern to you. You can do a search.

I went with the CCW version but have yet to build the front of the motor yet.

You will be basically putting on a 3.4l RWD front end on the 3500. The major difference is that the right Head on the 3500 is set back which changes the mount needed for the alternator. Dann and Marc from Killer B's have a bracket that will work for under $100. I plan to use the belt tensioner from BMC to delete the AC an bracket. The belt length will be slightly different then the complete kit that Brian sells, so I plan to get the belt locally.

Now when they say return-less, as normal they are not being truthful. Instead of being returned at the end of the fuel rail, it is returned at the fuel regulator. All it does is keep the front of then engine a little less cluttered. It also always use of the 3500 fuel rail and injectors. If not you have to use the 3400 set up.

Weber 32/36 DGV, a Stuck 45d Dizzy (stuck at 10 BTDC), Bad Vacuum advance disconnected n plugged. (refer to stuck dizzy) , Peco Exhast.

I may be wrong but don't you have to rotate the intake manifold 180 degrees because of clearance issues? I thought that was the reason one has to change the front timing cover to a 3100/3400 cover

Yes the reason why you have to change the front pulley assembly is due to rotating the UIM 180 degrees. The standard timing cover is very tall an keeps the intake from being turned around.

If you did not need the heater, you might look at leaving the UIM in the stock position and seeing if you could use the fresh air cowl intake as your intake to the engine.
