solder on a gas tank

This is for my Jag, not my MG, but hopefully that's OK.

The outlet on my fuel tanks is very large (.5 inch) and I'd like to make them 3/8 inch. (It's a long story.) The outlets are aluminum. Someone suggested using electrical solder and soldering the larger outlet to the narrower, 3/8 inch, aluminum fuel line.

If I do this, it would be on the feed side of the tank and not under pressure.

Can anyone here think of any reason this wouldn't work? I can't think of one, but I would rather risk embarrassment by asking here and be wrong than have a major fuel leak at some inopportune time...

Thanks,

Darian

spinning smiley sticking its tongue outNah, I'm pretty clueless sometimes, but I'm not THAT dumb, and though it might not sound like it, I'm actually not trying to save money/ghetto rig something. I'm trying to find a practical solution to getting the outlets to match the newer tank selection valve I ordered.

The outlet comes off, and if I do this, I plan to do it right and clean it thoroughly first.

Darian, I'm guessing I've misunderstood what you're trying to accomplish, but can you not just use some adapter fittings with 1/2" on one side & 3/8 on the other?

No, you haven't misunderstood. I'm trying to narrow it at the source for a cleaner conversion.

Hey Darian, just to let you know, I also have a Jaguar website, and you can login with the same username & password you use here, if you want to add your Jag to the registry, or post stuff in the Forums, you're more than welcome

Having re read that to make sure, If you have aluminum bungs goming out of the tank and are going to aluminum fuel line you can solder it but not with electrical solder which is tin and silver, you might have better luck with an aluminum solder kit, i have seen the rods but dont know which flux to use. There may be someone on here that has done this process.

Thanks, but I abandoned the idea and went with inline adapters. It was too big a risk to take if it didn't work.
