Hi, All.
I am trying to install a gear reduction starter in my '74 Midget. The engine is out of the car. I am trying to figure out how to orient the starter, using the adjustable mounting plate. Every orientation I try ends up with a mounting bolt fitting between the starter body and the plate, so there is not enough room for the bolt head and a locking washer!

Anybody got a picture or a description? Do I just go ahead without the lockwasher?

Thanks, Mitch

Where did you get the starter from? Why not ask them how to mount the starter?

How bout some pics to allow us to see the problem?

Here it is with the solenoid in the 8:00 position. I do not believe this will clear the frame.

Put the lock washer on the other side. If the bolt is not too long you can also slide it in from the bell housing side.

Mitch, it looks like your starter as an indexable plate to ease mounting. From the pic it doesn't look like you will be able to mount the unit like it is now. Have you tried to index it around to the next set of holes?
Where did you get the starter?

It is an indexable plate. I got it from Will at Rivergate. The engine is now in the car. I can play with it but I figured someone had already solved the problem.

Mitch, do you have a 4 or a 5spd trans in your car? I bought a starter from Will as well. I have a 5 spd tranny and got the starter from Will so I would not have to modify the Datsun tranny for the OEM starter.
I have had the gear starter for 3-4 years now and it is certainly an improvement over the OEM unit.

Mitch, I got my starter from Will also. I think it is from Gustafson, and it looks like yours. I think it will be easier to fit after the engine is in the car. You will just have to keep playing with it to get it clocked so it fits. Mine has the motor (what you are calling the solenoid I think is the motor) in the ~10:00 position - looking from the front - with the pentagon shaped part (gears and solenoid?) at the ~4:00 position. That part sits between the oil pan and the frame rail and it is close, but does not hit anything. There may be other positions that work. Mine has been in a long time and don't remember why I ended up with it like it is, but probably is the only way I could get it to fit, by trial and error.

Thanks, Jack. That will give me a start.
