fuel gauge question

When I turn the ignition on the fuel gauge goes all the way to the full side. Normally that would be a good thing but its not hooked up to the sender. Do I need to switch the wires around on the gauge?

probably just means your unconnected wire found a ground contact somewhere. The sender unit controls the ground (neg) side of the circuit.

The sender wire is just laying on the floor under the car.

where is the other wire that connects to it? that's the part that is getting + current from the wiring harness, if it is able to make a connection to grounded metal, that would complete the circuit and the gauge would read as full.

The gauge is receiving a full 12 volts and wants to see the sending unit.
