Gas Tank Filter

As next step in my reassembly process I plumbed up my new fuel pump to original gas tank which had been cleaned. Could not establish suction from the tank to the pump. Today I pulled the tank to get a closer look. With the sending unit out, I can see the remains of an intank filter at the end of the suction pipe. It is on the other side of a baffle so no access to filter which I want to remove/replace since I am sure it is plugged and not allowing me to pump gas. Filter appears to be non-serviceable which surprises me. Any options but to cut a hole in top of tank to access filter? Any experience with this problem?

Blow air through it from the pickup tube.

Rick I ran into this same issue in my 74. My remedy was to cut the flare off the tubing and remove the ass'y from the tank. I was able to clean it thoroughly and reinstall it back thru the filler hole. I then borrowed a double flaring tool from Autozone to reflare.Be sure the filter is turned down to the bottom of the tank when tightening.

I was able to get the suction tube out by pulling it out and releasing the filter inside the tank. The tube was plugged solid. No amount of air would have cleared. I guess I am going back without an in tank filter because I see no way of getting a filter on inside the tank. I have a filter ahead of the pump so that should suffice.

I've wondered about the people that have the tanks cleaned and coated inside. It would seem like that would clog that strainer.
