So the vibration in the transmission tunnel was probibly caused bty the front U joint. 2 out of 4 citclips were missing and the bearing caps on the front yoke were loose. Thanks to those of you that suggested that. Now I know there are a lot of different ways to get the driveshaft back in, I was just wondering what you've tried. This is a 1972 MG Midget with the original trans, engine, and drivetrain.

P.S. it was just discovered to have no oil in the transmission. Current owner never checked it in the two years he had it and the car went through 3 other owners in rapid succession all of whome gave up on it. No wonder the gearbox was so loud.

I use a 3 inch inspection mirror so that I can see down the tunnel and just put it in- pretty easy to do when you can see in there. No tape or anything else required that way.

The tunnel is not that long. You should be able to reach the back of the transmission with one arm and put it back on by feel. I've done it before. Some people (often racers) will cut a square opening in the pan underneath (approximately 4" square. As I recall, later cars were manufactured that way. Easy to make a cover to close it back up too.

Tape the joint with MASKING tape so its stiff and slide it in. Its quick and fast
