Rebuilt the Distributor Today

Now that I have the engine and transmission back into my 72 Midget, I am starting to reinstall the rest of the stuff in the engine bay. Today was rebuild the distributor day. There was a little slop in the shaft so a new bushing was pressed in. Everything was cleaned, lubed, and reassembled with new points and condenser. The distributor was put into the engine, but static timing will have to wait till my next day off. The sun started going down and working with an open garage door, the mosquitos were feasting on me so I gave up for the day.

Distributor looks good Wayne. You need to get one of these to come to your neighborhood every couple of weeks like they do here. No mosquitos!

Amen to the fogger trucks !!! I grew up in Florida, where I think the mosquito is the state bird. Every summer the fog truck came through the neighborhood several times. But up here in Tennessee they rarely do. It's only when something like cases of West Nile virus pop up. They react rather than act proactively. For the past couple of years a new type of mosquito has been around. They are about half the size of regular ones, and they are much more agressive. Although dusk is when most of them swarm, some are out all day and will bite you anytime.

Sorry Wayne, perhaps I misunderstood. The sun actually goes down in Nashville! devil smiley

You have opted to one of the most overlooked maintenance items that is SO important to a proper running engine. I smileys with beer your understanding and fortitude to "git 'em dun"!

What I truly need to know is where in Nashville a decent real BBQ can be had at 1am near I 24. There used to be a place on Trinity West but it closed.

Back on thread...thumbs up smileys with beer

I always thought a distributor was a very complex part for someone to take apart, specially to put it back again and have all the springs and all that perfectly matched and calibrated.

I was thinking in sending it to a special workshop in UK for cleaning and calibration

Wayne, could you explain the process for pressing in the new bushing? My shaft has slop, as well, and is causing the car to run poorly at times. I'll likely have Jeff rebuild it in the long run, but I like tinkering smiling smiley

Getting the correct bushing replacements can be a problem. One also needs to have a machine and the operating knowledge to bring the advance into spec. That's rather dated tech these days and not too many "old timers" are around that have both the knowledge and machinery and the special springs to do that job.

On the other hand, anything electrical or mechanical can only benefit from a clean up inspection. I suggest that in the case of the dizzy, the internals have been cleaned once since leaving the OEM.

Thanks, Robert. Sounds like my best option is still having it rebuilt by Jeff. I'm actually considering one of his "ignition packages" instead of rebuilding, mainly because at this point of the season, I don't want the car out of commission waiting for the new dizzy to go to Jeff and back smiling smiley Have to enjoy the last few evenings with the top down and the wife.
