Which distributor ?

I need a good distributor set up for the 1275 in my Bugeye. The stock unit is a 23D4 with no vacuum advance. I freed-up the frozen advance spindle, but it looks like someone stretched the two weight springs (maybe with a screwdriver trying to get them off the posts ?). I understand that the springs are not available for replacement, and that the unit needs to be re-curved for modern fuels. I also understand that although this was the stock distributor for the 1275 in 1973, and I assume it should work fine, it was also used on the Cooper S and is basically best for a racing application where it would mainly be at high RPMs most of the time. I also have a 25D unit ( 41491) that may or may not need to be set-up for the 1275. I do not have a vacuum port on the AUD 502 HS2's. Should I get the 23 re-curved or find a way to get a vacuum line to the 25 ? Could I pull vacuum from the manifold or does it have to be from a port on the carb ?

here is the guy you want to talk to, he knows the answers to all of those questions, and can sell you whatever parts you need, including a rebuilt/recurved distributor, custom to your particular set up:

Thanks, I did contact Jeff, and it looks like he cannot supply me with just the centrifugal advance weight springs. I think they have to be matched to the distributor and can't just be plugged in by some part number. I have read elsewhere that they are basically NLA, at least to the general public. I checked the specs for the 25D #41491 and it almost matches the #41400, which is also a '73 unit, and was used in the Midget. The 41491 is manifold ported, so I might be in luck. Should be close enough to run OK and I think I'll consider sending the 23D to Jeff at some point.

I'd send the 25D to Jeff and tell him you want it set up for manifold vacuum, your application specifics and let him work his magic.

The advance curve of the 41400, 41491, and even the Cooper S distributor is basically a "smog" setup by today's standards. It'll run out of power by 3500 rpms, pushing you WAY out of your power band unless you seriously retard the timing at idle. Then it'll be a dog at low rpms. The vac unit on the 41491 is very much appropriate for your car, but the advance curve is NOT.
