Post road trip review

So I recently popped the question to my girlfriend of 7 years and we spent the last year planning our big wedding. She wanted to incorporate the Midget into a few of the original engagement pictures and I gladly agreed. Then when the wedding finally came round she and mostly her mom wanted the Midget to be a part of the big day by proving the transportation to the reception from the church. Originally I was thrilled to have one of my projects (the only one she likes) be part of the day, but as the day drew closer I began to think about the 2000+ mile road trip from our home in Texas to her family in South Dakota. I have been driving the Midget quite a bit since I got it back onto the road in March, however this was to be the ultimate test of it's reliability. I finished up a few little interior things I had been putting off. Placed a last minute order with Moss for some new chrome headlight rings and a dash switch. I fitted the spare tire and jack and headed off. Everything went flawless on the way up. It was a bit hot, but a few extra stops for stretching and some sunscreen lotion for my left arm and we made it. The wedding went off without a hitch. The Midget performed brilliantly. On the way back home however I had a few small issues. My driver vent window. Well it fell out, but I caught it mid air and retrieved it back to my passenger seat. So, I guess now I would like some suggestions and methods of repair to keep this from occurring again. Is there a specific epoxy or glue to use or is my rubber band method the most permanent solution available? I also lost my fuel gauge about half way home. We stopped for fuel. Topped off the tank and after driving for a bit looked down and it showed empty. I started second guessing myself. Had I actually filled up the tank, or was I standing at the station washing my windows and drinking my Coke like an idiot while no gas was pumping. So I stopped again and topped off with less than a gallon. This time the gauge worked fine all the way to full. Then after the next fill up it stopped working again. I think it may be the voltage stabilizer. The level sensor is new and the gauge seems ok. Is there any way to test the stabilizer? I also got pummeled with a rock that smacked the windscreen and cracked the glass. I guess I needed a new one anyway. Other than that we made it back and mechanically she performed admirably. Even through Kansas with 100+ degree air temperatures she didn't miss a beat. I did giggle as we drove by several newer vehicles overheated and stranded on the turnpike. Best mileage was 43.5 mpg clocking almost 75 the entire time. Overall it was a blast. A most enjoyable experience. Our thanks to the members here that have been so helpful during the restoration. I feel lucky to have such a wealth of information and opinion available to me. Thanks MGE!

Sorry about the gross bug guts. She needs a bath.

Jeremy,

Sorry I have no answer on the glass, I've been worried mine might fly off too someday.

I wanted to say congratulations on your wedding and your car!

I used plain old silicone rubber to fasten my vent window in place. I seriously doubt if it will ever come loose again. It's in there!

Congrats mate! My Midget was being rushed to be ready for my wedding last year... Didn't quite make it unfortunately. My fuel gauge isn't working at the moment either!

Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
I can't help with the sidelight issue, never seen that happen before.
I'm glad that you're enjoying your Midget.

You ARE the luckiest man in the world.

Congratulations on so many levels.

The fix for the wind wing is to fit a new packing piece/gasket... Have never done it but I understand it can be trying. I'd be temped to use goober-schmuckum modern-day window sealant in a tube-stuff.

May not be the voltage stabilizer... dern, something else is connected to that, isn't there? Well, it that item was also being troublesome then it would confirm. Otherwise, it is more likely a bad connection somewhere or a sticky float at the sender.

Thanks all. I guess I will attempt some glue. I'm not sure what prompted the glass to dislodge but I'm hoping some windshield urethane I picked up may do the trick. It's very sticky and is meant to hold in glass so... The windshield I decided to go crazy on. I was just planning on replacing the glass and throwing it back in but no. I got the "lets just clean it up a bit" bug. Right now it is fully dismantled and stripped to bare aluminum. I also removed the sun visor parts and the little buttons for the tonneau snaps or whatever and welded all the holes shut. I am going to sand it all smooth so it should look ultra clean. It has a date with my anodizer next week. They are going to do a strip on it and then a clear anodize. I'll grab some pics on Monday.

Congrats on the Nuptials and your first midget roadtrip experience! (the sunscreen specifically for the left arm is very important! I take SPF 50 on my trips and spread it on everytime i stop.. greasy but not burned.)
