fulcrum pin removal

im starting to take apart my front suspension and i can't get either fulcrum pin to budge. is there a trick to it? last time i did one of these they came out easy.

Lower fulcrum or upper? If lower, have you taken the cotter pin out? If upper, sometimes old rubber wont let go, and have you taken the pinch bolt out?

won't budge in the control arms or in the kingpin? I just did my front end a few weeks ago. One pin came out fine, one I had to cut in two places, next to each side of the kingpin, and remove each end separately, as it was stuck fast to the kingpin. If rusted solid and cutting won't do it for you, try heat, try acetone, AT fluid, maybe screw extractor from each end..??

lower fulcrum. i tried heating it up. it soaked all day with rust inhibitor. its stuck good. i guess i'll just use a cutting wheel on it. thanks guys.

Another thing to consider is that fulcrum pins and kingpins are reletively inexpensive. If the lower fulcrum pin bushings are worn, you need to relace the lower fulcrum pin and the lower a arm anyway. In this case taking it apart may alo endup damaging the kingpin. That said why not just take out the lower a a-rm and send the whole thing off to the scrapyard and start with fresh parts?

X2 what Seth said. Putzing with trying to make the old fulcrum/kingpin assy come back to life is an effort in frustration. New fulcrum pins won't fit OEM "A" arms without a lot of massaging. Best to get a matched set of pins and arms, you'll be way ahead. I know the folks on this forum can give you a good price and excellent parts.

Not entirely true on the new pin not fitting an old arm. I had no trouble at all.

However, I have since learned that some rebuilders use a slightly different pin so the resultant parts do not intermatch any longer.

So, you need to source the correct pin.

All that being said, replacement may be the best way but once the king pin is out you should be able to drive the last bit of pin out and refurbish it.

A-arms will need inspection but are likely cracked as it seems they all are (unless you are lucky or it ws recently replaced... doesn't sound like it in this case).

The new fulcrum pins I got from Robert Kirk fit my original control arms perfectly. You won't know if the new pins will actually install thru the kingpin and into the control arms until you disassemble the old arms, get the old pins out, and try the new ones. Once you get to that point though and find that the arms are bent so that the new pins will not install, then you are stuck. Barring an ability to tweek the arms to make the new pins screw in, you will then be lead time away from new control arms, maybe a week to 10 days for order and ship time, so you better figure that into your plans. Any damage to the tip of the control arm, or really anywhere in the control arm, from hitting curbs, etc, and chances are that you are going to have difficulty installing new pins. Clean the threads on both sides of the king pin very well, before trying to install new fulcrum pins. This might help ease the install of the new pins a bit.

i cut the pins on each side of the king pins. i was able to remove the fulcrum pins after that, they were seized in the king pins. no cracks on the control arms and the threads look good enough for me to reuse them. i already have new fulcrum pins, king pins, bushings and hardware. im removing the drums and installing discs so im sure i'll have to this all over again because the guy i got them from unbolted the shock, cut the brake hose, and unbolted the control arm from the car. thanks for the suggestions.
