Differential Gear Oil

I have a 72 Mg Midget I wanted to change the differential oil on. After reading the forums it seems like maybe the consensus is to go with GL4 80w-90 oil. Just want to verify this is what I should get and find out what are some brands that are GL4 and where to buy. I'm having a hard time finding it online for sale.

Thanks,
Brett

I will be changing the diff oil in the near future and had planned on using Valvoline DuraBlend 80W-90 gear oil. It has GL-5, GL-4 and MT-1 API grade ratings, and also has the "extreme pressure" additives that are required for use in the diff. You can probably find it at most auto parts outlets; Advance Auto Parts sells it, the SKU is VV280.

I tried to change mine last night. The drain plug just disintegrated when I tried to loosen it, like it was made from plastic. My guess is that it had never been removed before and had corroded/welded itself to the diff. Always something...

A quick search should pull it up, but there was some good info on GL4 vs GL5 on here, and that the past concerns with GL5 don't hold up anymore. They talked to the concerns of "yellow metals" copper and brass etc.

yeah, when I first ran across the GL5 concerns I freaked out, but after reading up on it I learned that the issue was only with GL5 when it first came out, years ago. Anything you buy today labelled "GL5" is fine.

Silly Question Jeff,
Are you sure you took out the drain: at the bottom of the Differential and has an odd sized square drive or did you take out the PLASTIC confused smiley breather?

Y.
