nitro lacquer- anyone ever topcoat with urethane clear

.....have top-coated many acrylic bases with clear.......good results after 1/2 hour wait before the clear.....going to mix me up some dark brg in nitro.......urethane clear would save a lot of effort....but i wonder if the nitro would like it....[nitro clear is not too rugged]......yellow and green gallons were only $30 and $35 locally......i used nitro before on a midget and b......but a bit of buffing involved.......nah- enamel or urethane green base is the usual trip.....but a primitive garage with few lights and a small fan plus enamel fumes ain't my idea of fun....jim

I wouldn't try that combo, unless you're wanting to strip and completely refinish that car in the near future. You might get it to lay down for a while, but I believe it will come back on you. Then that bargain paint won't have been such a good deal.

Better to shoot a quality urethane base followed by the recommended urethane clear coat. Yes, it's more money up front, but a better and longer lasting job in the end.

Good Luck...

brian- thanks for the thoughts.....actually, 'tain't bargain paint....!.....regular pro lacquer [mostly woodworkers use it now]....low cost.....if you look in some hot rod zines from the sixties, you will see most cars proudly restored with many coats of nitro....wet-sanded in between coats.....a spectacular finish.....very thin, too.....noticed you have a z-car.....i did about 10 in acrylic lacquer with a dupont urethane clear [recommended for lacquer]......i once did a 58 mercedes in nitro.....no clear....factory beige......nitro is easy to spray.....and the finish resembles original finishes in terms of being suitably thin.....i once saw an e-jag done with black lacquer in a shop.....super......i just prefer lacquer.....the actual dangers of the urethane catalysts are very real.....i know of a few bodymen who are not exactly healthy after years of urethane spraying....diamont, in particular.....and imron......in the 80's here, it was common shop practice to spray lacquer base with 2 or 3 coats of urethane clear.....unfortunately, some years ago, dupont, sherwin williams pulled all their lacquer products and forced shops to pay very high prices for urethanes......rm and ppg still offer lacquer......anyway, i may spray a test panel with the idea.....wait a few days and see ........jim

I used a urethane clear that was specifically formulated to go over lacquer a long long time ago. I can't remember the name, but it worked pretty well.
I did a bunch of research on paints recently and found that most urethanes use a lacquer based thinner- not exactly the same as most lacquer thinners but the reducers are based on the same stuff, and and in many cases they're compatible. A test panel should tell you just how compatible they are.

why, thanks for the tip, paul..........yeah, a test panel should be interesting......curiously, nitro and acrylic lacquers don't mix, but each could topcoat the other.......the urethane thinner stuff is interesting........i'll let you all know the results in a few weeks when the sprite is done.......cheerio, jim
