Hi everyone Im a new member...
I just pulled the motor and trans on the midget
(it was my first time)
the clutch was not working...and had a leaking slave for the clutch..
and the throw out bearing was in 2 peices...
i have all the parts but when i was cleaning up i found a pin..
its about 1/4 inch round and 3/4 inch long....
it was clean (no oil or grease on it)
couls it be something for the shift leaver....
i had a frien helping me and he took the shifter off..
i think he said he droped something if anyone has a thought on what it could be
thanks for your time

If it looks like #4 in this pic, you should have 2 of them. They hold the throwout bearing to the shaft.

Bill,
Nothing like you describe is in the transmission or clutch system. Sounds like a roll pin. If it was in the clutch area, it could be why your to brg broke. Maybe that roll pin was used in place of a cotter pin on the clutch slave cylinder clevis pin.

I hope your friend was careful as there is a spring and plastic cup below the shifter that can easily be lost once the shift lever has been removed. The spring and cup sit in the shift rod. These keep the shifter from rattling when driving. Kind of important. Cup is white plastic and spring is about 3/4" diameter and about 1" long. This could be what he dropped.

Thanks Steve...I been up most of the nite thinking about that pin...
it looks like a bearing from a U-Joint it took a long time to think of that
but i didnt do anything to the u joints...we had the car about 4 years...
or that pin thing could have been laying around on the floor
and I will make sure the spring and the plastic cup are in place

WOO! The pin looks like it came from a U-Joint? Not a roll pin but a needle bearing pin? Check your crankshaft. The pilot(spigot) bearing on later 1275 is a caged needle bearing instead of a bronze bushing. A bad pilot bearing(missing a needle) will cause the input(first motion) shaft to jump on take off or shifts resulting in or could cause a broken TO Bearing.

Bill,

Does the pin that you have look like one from the center of this pilot bearing?

Wish I had a picture. If it was 5/16 it may have been one of the positioning studs from transmission to engine fell out when you took it apart. One goes top center hole the other is left lower side.

If you can find a Datsun 210 5speed they make an adapter kit for it but it'll cost you. I posted that guide pin as 5/16 but I may be wrong because that sure looks like one. It can fall out because it is only pressed in and when transmission is bolted to engine has nowhere to go. If that is what is it don't worry car will run just fine without it. It basically holds the engine and transmission lined up so you can put the bolts in.

Go to Victoria British midget catalog page 42 item 38 dowel. I think that is it. Don't worry you don't need it, nothing bad will happen.

That,s a flywheel dowel pin for the clutch pressure plate, knock it back into the missing dowel pin hole on the flywheel, and you are good to go.
