Starter problem?

Posted by Mark Scott

I've got a recent problem with my 1975 MG Midget starting after being driven for a short while and warming up. Initially, the car starts with a cold crank. Starter seems to drag slightly but usually turns right over without even using the choke.
Occasionally when attempting to crank with cold engine, the starter will start to turn the engine over and then spin as if it has become disengaged but will always engage and crank on the 2nd or 3rd try.
The problem is that after driving for a few miles and turning the engine off, the starter drags to the point that it won't turn over and it seems like the battery is dead. If you try to jump it off it still drags and sometimes will turn over but won't crank. Even if you push it and pop off the clutch it won't turn over and crank. After the engine cools off she cranks without a problem (I usually still have to jump it off at that point but I'm thinking that is because I attempted to crank quite a few times while engine was warm).
It has a new battery and after getting the car to crank again and driving home, it cranks without a problem the next time I go to drive. Is this the starter for sure or are there other things that could be a problem that I'm not thinking of.

Thanks in advance for any responses,

Mark

Maladjusted timing can cause hard starting. So can bad (or missing) ground connections.

Clean all the major terminals and plan on a new starter. I doubt the motor has enough miles but a much miled car will "sieze" when its hot...the cylinders are so worn the hot pistons get "cocked".

As you descibe the problem it almost sounds like bad connections a very typical problem.
