I am going to change my 1970 wires to bolt ons as a result of worn hubs and wire rims. The knocking is too much to get used to. I have a parts car (72) with bolt ons. I plan on just switching the entire rear as the axles are different lenghs from wires to bolt ons.
What can I expect up front?
Thx Toby

Hi Toby,
You should be able to pull off the front disc wheel hub assembly, brake disc and all and mount it to the wire wheel spindle if memory serves. If the bearings are good just clean and repack and tighten to spec.
Good luck, Rut

Agree with Rut. don't be tempted to save the disc (rotor) though as they are different.

ditto above. Front discs are different, rear should swap out/in with no problems.

You should be able to move your old parts over on the BST (buy, sell, trade) forum. Seems like just as many want to switch to wires as switch from them.

I've always thought that the wire wheel setup carries a sizable weight penalty, especially rotating mass, but haven't seen any weights to back it up.

I'd be interested in the following weights if you have a chance to measure:

rear axle with wire wheels and knockoffs v.s. rear axle with disc wheels bolted on

1 wire wheel, hub and knockoff v.s. disc wheel, hub and lug nuts

Thanks, and good luck with your conversion.

I was surprised to learn that the wire wheels are lighter than the steel wheels (and, in fact, the last person who posted the weights even said that the wire wheel was less weight than the "minilite", knock off cast aluminum wheel!). However, the W/W hub must way more (at least at the rear).

All these years, I had assumed that wire wheels were a weight penalty, so it will be interesting to see the results of this test.

The knockoffs alone weigh over a pound a piece

(1 lb 4.5 oz).

So if the rotors are different are the calipers the same?
If I understood correctly I can remove the cotter pin, unbolt the spindle nut behind the grease cap remove the splined hub and replace with the bolt on hub. Then switch rotors. Seems easy enough

Thanks guys. Not sure selling these used ones is a good idea as they are very worn. If they were worth keeping I would never be changing

Calipers are the same rotors only are different.
