Seats?

They are really easy to take apart and put back together. Start with the circular clips around the perimeter of the base, open each clip and it comes off the seat frame. Once the clips are all off (they go on pretty easily too) the upholstery comes right off. The foam will then come right off and the mesh will then come off (maybe some more clips). The mechanical parts are all accessible and then can be lubed and worked until they move nicely. It would be easy to paint the seat frame at this point but you won't see the new paint when assembled. I would recommend replacing both the seat foams and the rubber mesh base. The foams are pretty expensive but really worth it. Fixing up your old seats will be a million times better than someone else's worn out seats. Everything goes back together in reverse order and it is not difficult to get the upholstery to fit nicely over the foam. Total time for both seats a few hours for the first time, less after you have done it once. Good luck.

Seems difficult to fit. I'll try and rebuilding mine I have. I came figure out how to open them up.

Replacing my bottom foam and mesh on my driver's seat was one of the first things i did to my car. I was surprised at how easy and fast it was to do and I was also surprised by how much it improved my seat.

Do you have them removed from the car?
That would be my first step.
After that follow directions given by others in this thread.

If you are going to get rid of your old seats then you have nothing to loose. The back foam might be alright, but you should definitely replace the bottom foams and probably replace the rubber mesh. The foam seems expensive (like $50 I recall) but it is really worth it.

Yes, my floor is bare and I will try that. Thank you. Can you buy new leather for them somewhere too? Mine don't really need it right now.

Where can I find foam and rubber mesh at?

Moss or Victoria British, I bought mine from Moss. They also have new upholstery.

Early Miata seats sell anywhere from $100 to $300 per pair. They are narrow enough to fit the Spridget and are more comfortable than stock seats.

Sources:

junkyards/auto recyclers

sports car racers (Spec Miata is SCCA's biggest class... they don't use the stock seats).

Also consider:

Pontiac Fiero seats. Someone on here offers seat rail kits to put them in MGs.

Or,

place a WTB (Wanted to Buy) ad on the trader forum on this site for some black MG seats.

In reply to # 2054421 by penguininn I have done the interior panels of our 79 with SEM brand-very good results. I did not however do the seats as over time my experience is it rubs off. We do have a few of these cars & I will be recovering the seats.

Another thing you may want to consider is to leave the new seats the color they are, and dye the door panels to match them. The panels go through a lot less stress and are far less likely to scuff and peel.

I was really surprised at how comfortable my seat became after I replaced the bottom foam and rubber mesh.

I still can't get mine apart. How do you get the headrest off?

it just pulls off with a lot of force, they rust in. I used leverage to get mine out. Maybe stand on the seat and pull hard. dont try to take the headrest apart.

it's been a while since I took one apart, but I thought there was a ring around the headrest post that needed to be pushed down to release the pressure on it & then it pops out-perhaps someone else will verify this.

Hmm. Idk. These seats are giving me more trouble than the front end did. I think my brake master cylinder blew out too. So that will be fun figuring out what's wrong with it. Was bleeding brakes and I looked down to a puddle of brake fluid on around my feet.

do you have any parts books like Moss or Victoria Brittish? The exploded views are great when trying to assemble or tear down something.

I have a mechanics manual. That's about it. I ordered a part boon from VB. But they never sent it.

Miata seats are actually really easy to fit, don't worry about drilling or cutting metal to fit them, its really easy, you can get grinding disk bits for your drill and it only takes a few minutes. As for the seats I know canley classics has some really nice kits with instructions. There was just a big discussion over on the spit/gt6 forum about seats being redone and you can find some really really good info there and those guys are happy to send you the instructions they wrote up for redoing stock seats. I redid the vinyl lining in the top of my hardtop with leather/vinyl spray. Which is of course dye. I sprayed it lightly once and let it sit in the sun and then I sprayed it lightly again to really look nice and again let it sit in the sun. My head its it all the time and I have no rubbing or anything of that sort. It seems perfectly fine. An upside to the miata seats however is that many of them have speakers built into the headrests and those can be tied right to your radio, no need for unsightly speaker boxes. Just a thought.
