I found a good deal on seats, the problem is the seats are tan colored. My interior is black. How does painting the tan seats black turn out and is it worth it?

The black paint likes to transfer to your clothes is my experiance esp when the temp is hot outside

Why not just buy new seat skins and recover them

Well, I would but the mechanical in my seats are messed up. They dont move at all and I cant figure out how to tear em down. So I thought it best to just find new ones.

I have had really good luck with the spray on vinyl dyes. I prep and clean with lacquer thiner, spray on two or three coats and let it bake in the sun for 12 hours or so. I did my drivers seat last spring and it has never transeferd to my tan slacks.

So you think its worth it? And it won't look bad or rub off? Is the paint expensive?

The previous owner of my '79 Party Midget sprayed all interior vinyl with the spray on stuff. I does not come off on your clothes. But it's peeling off in a whole bunch of places, probably due to improper prep. I've used it before on door panels and other interior panels. It works well if you clean the area to be sprayed very thoroughly. Not expensive - about $8 per 11 ounce spray can.

Okay. So clean with lawyer thinner and coat more than once in the paint? How ling between coats?

I've found that only one coat is necessary.

Great. Thank you for the info. I think I will go through with it then and just paint the seats.

The Duplicolor brand vinyl product is a "coating". And it's peeling off of the seats on my Midget. sad smiley

It was applied by the previous owner and I would guess his prep was poor. I've used it successfully on other cars.

Well, I think I'm going to give it a shot. The seats are in great condition and he only wants $275. And I am having major trouble finding black ones.

I have done the interior panels of our 79 with SEM brand-very good results. I did not however do the seats as over time my experience is it rubs off. We do have a few of these cars & I will be recovering the seats.

I guess if anything it will be temporary until I actually get black seats later on. U want to restore it to car show quality eventually.

the seat mechanisms in our 73 were frozen too-after removing the skins we were able to get them working well. You need to remove the clips on the back skin & peel it up to reveal the head rest post & then you can tear them down.

How is the black upholstery on your old seats?
Have you taken your old seats apart yet? If not, give that a try first, the upholstery comes off and on easily and they are very simple once you get the upholstery off. If they are frozen you can probably free them up and lubricate them pretty easily. You should replace the seat foam and rubber mesh on the bottom unless those parts are in stellar shape.
I don't doubt that dying or painting them will work in theory, but things like that tend to not work out over time in reality.

The leather isn't in terrible condition. A tad worn. But I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to tear them down.

Have you considered Miata seats. Lots around and usually cheaper. They fit like a glove and are very comfortable

Really? From which year? And they look good? And how about the brackets for mounting?

I got mine from a '95 Miata.
They fit well, you have to grind or cut off the front pins.
I had to drill a couple new holes for the Miata slider mounts.
