WHAT WAS YOUR VERY FIRST CAR?

1980 MG MGB Limited Edition (LE) "Black Betty"
My first car was a 1977 MG Midget i bought in 1980. The dash was cracked bad so i converted it to the old metal dash. I remember all my friends making fun of me because i didn't buy a muscle car like them. All i can say is that whenever they were around, i never touched the steering wheel. They would drive it everywhere. Being young i beat the ever livin piss out of that car but could never kill it. Raced it everywhere.

In a testament to it's design, i was in two accidents:
The first a Ford pick-up rear ended me on the drivers side tail light section. His radiator went through the fan, he couldn't drive home. Midget was damaged but i could still drive home.
Second, an Aries K car hit me square on the drivers side while going through an intersection. I think the fact that the car hit between the pillar in front of the door and the rear of the car saved me. The Aries K car's front end collapsed. It pushed my car pretty far though and i blacked out but was ok. The Midget was somehow repairable and back on the road again. I guess it more or less bounced away from the Aries K car minimizing the damage.

1963 SS Impala convertible. I was 14 years old. Back in those days you could drive dawn to dusk
at 14 without an adult. Sure was fun driving that bad boy to Jr. High.
The girls LOVED it.

It was a 1970 Opel Kadett that had been repoed by the credit union my dad belonged to. Paid $400 for it in 1976. I bought a 74 Midget two years later--the Midget was the first car I ever bought and paid for out of my own pocket, but the Opel was really my first car.

1st: 1963 VW Beetle Deluxe. (Additional chrome bars on the overiders and a 40hp motor instead of the standard 36hp)

3rd: 1959 FC Holden (same body shape as a 57 Chevy but with an inline 138 cu/in 6)
4th: 1966 Ford Falcon XP (Probably the same shape as a 64 Falcon in the States)

My first car was a 1960 Plymouth Savoy 2 door. 318 with manual tranny. My first car that was actually pretty reliable was a 64 dodge cornet with 318 and pushbutton automatic. I loved them both!!

Richard, my first car was the same, light blue Toyota Corolla, but mine was a 1980. Guess I'm a bit older than you !!

That car just wouldn't die, nice little 5 speed. Sold that to get a 1980 Supra, cool car, couldn't handle for shit. I also switched to BMWs, owning a 1994 325iC, with 225k miles and counting

In reply to # 2024530 by rbarakat713 well the first car i actually paid for was my midget, however my "first car" was a light blue 1009 toyota corolla, with matching blue interior that i got from my sister who bought it from our grandma. i didnt feel safe in that car, mostly because at freeway speeds it would rattle and shake like none other, and then got my 1997 bmw 7 series with car phone and all. i view my bmw as my actual first car because i only had the toyota for about 4 months. im too attached to my bmw, that i dont care that i have a 1971 honda 600 waiting to be driven.

'61 or '62 VW convertible without the optional brakes for $200 in 1966. Wonderful, fun car that ran great once all the small things were fixed. First problem that made me want to move on was carrying a rather large person in the back seat started a fire. The horse hair stuffed rear seat sat on top of the 6 volt battery and the seat springs made contact due to the extra weight...what a smell! Traded even for a '67 TR4A in '68 and it started my love affair with LBCs. Bought the Bugeye last year and hope to have it ready in time to drive this fall.

'62 Midget. Paid $210 for it, ~$200 of which covered the nearly new tires and top. The rest of the car was worth about $10. One carb was stuck, the clutch wouldn't fully disengage (bad slave), the brakes were so far out of adjustment that you had to pump them out to the drums, the starter was bad, the rockers were rusty, and if you lifted the floor mats you could see pavement. I loved it. Kept it for about 18 months before deciding I needed something more reliable for college - and got a used Pinto.

I learned a lot about how to fix - and how not to fix - cars on that both of those. The MG actually looked pretty good when I was done with it, although the bondo could probably be measured in pounds.

My first car was a '59 Vauxhall Victor ("Flintstone mobile"winking smiley in '68 (New York road salt). It was only 9 years old but was ALL rust. Bought it for $25 with a broken axle shaft, drove it for a year and broke the other axle shaft on the last day of school. Junked it and bought a '62 Sprite.

1961 Morris Minor 1000 painted the most hideous shade of blue you ever saw. It also became my very first hot rod after I trashed the 4-banger attempting to do burn outs (not successful). Managed to wedge a 298 and 4-speed into after some cutting etc (burn outs were vastly more successful with this combination). Drove it like that until I was rear-ended in downtown Riverside, Ca and shoved into the car in front me. Pretty much wadded up the Minor. Fun while it lasted though.

Sure seem to be more than a few of us who caught the Little British Car disease in Morris Minor. Who knew?
