swivel axle / king pin rebuild

Posted by vroom

I am in the process of rebuilding the front end of my "67 Sprite. Got the king pin bushings pressed in and now I would like to ream them to size but I can't figure out how to hold the swivel axle perpendicular to the reamer without some sort of fixture. Any advice on how to or who would do this would be great. I live between Madison WI and Dubuque.

As Seth says...the reamer for this is task specific. It is a dual cutting reamer that reams both bushes at the same time and inline.
Look at the Mo$$ catalog and see what it looks like etc.

I have seen that reamer but the price is listed as N/A. I assumed that means not available

Its availible through kirks auto and also from mini mania.

It is also available through the chicagoland MG clubs tool lending program. Since you're in SW wisconsin, it might be possible for you to drive to wheaton or naperville one weekend and you could use ours for free. If you want to do that, I can get the reamer out of the club tool crib and even get a friend (Barney Gaylord who'se done these a zillion times) to help out by offering his experience and his garage.

So I looked at the British Moss site. They have the reamer 158 £ plus shipping so now I would like to find someone else who could do the reaming.

Again Kirks auto should be able to help get you that reamer at a lower cost. My offer still stands, however, if you want someone else to do the reaming, you could send it to peter cauldwell.

Thanks for all the offers all. As you can probably tell I am not quite as fast a responder as most folks on this site.
I will call Peter C in the morning as his solution is closest.

Tim,
I pulled my front end apart and evaluated all of it. That helped me decide how to go about replacing/refurbishing everything. My king pins were a little pitted and all the bushings were shot...my a arms were suspect as well. When I totaled up the cost it was really more cost effective to let Peter C take care of it. I can't say enough about the quality of the work and replacement parts and turn around time was good. I paid shipping from Alabama and feel like I got a bargain. If I lived as close to Madison as you do I'd make the trip just to see the operation and meet Peter.
Good luck, Rut

Those bushings should be reamed exactly in-line with each other. They can be done one at a time from each end, but it will then be if-fy if they are exactly in line. There is a special reamer made that does both bushings at once and in-line. You can find it on Moss's website. It is pricey, if not N/A. I am trying to get one via Robert Kirk for my own use and for the local MG club's use, but do not have it in my hand yet. I bet this is the reamer that Peter C has, but do not know. The bushings are also a pain to press in and out without the proper equipment. I am of the opinion that this is an operation best left to someone with the right tools and experience. This is unfortunate and is a limitation of this design.

Yes Peter C has the right reamer. This is one of the few jobs I leave to those with the experience, proper tools, and assortment of shims to build them properly as well. Its money well spent.

Shims? I don't remember there being any shims.

From doing a few of these, the reference to shims would be the endplay from the bottom side of the upper trunion step to the top shoulder of the king pin itself.

The shims go on top of the king-pin, under the top nut. Moss Catalog item 4a.
