Thomas - my late Labrador Retriever used to impliedly 'call shotgun' whenever she rode in a car with me.

Weird thing is, she not only always chose the best seat, the hierarchy being: driver's seat; front passenger seat (shotgun); lefthand rear seat (the better to air out her chops and 'sail' her ears). What really got me was that she would never default to the way-back or worst seat when lots of people or animals were piling in. She would in every instance jump into the driver's seat, move obediently and without prompting to 'shotgun' when I approached, into the next best position until challenged (by a human), and so on. The only exception was whenever I went into the store. She'd either go straight to shotgun or if someone (or some thing) were occupying it, she'd grab the driver's seat!

Joel
