3 main bearing 1800 harmonic balance or pulley

Am getting ready to drop an 1800cc 3 main bearing engine into the MG ZB. Will the thicker crankshaft pulley be used or do I swap back to the original 1500cc pulley? I'm not sure if the thicker pulley will clear the cross piece. Also, in changing thej dipstick the 1800cc has a screw that is buried in the threaded spot for the old dipstick. She won"t budge.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for yu'all expertise.

I just put the crank pulley from a 74 1800 5 main bearing engine on my 1600 engine. Cleared the chassis just fine.

Phil,

I had this problem. It didn't stop me getting the engine in, but when I wanted to change the fan belt!!?

My solution to enable the fan belt to pass between the harmonic balancer and the crossmember was to grind away the crossmember! I took about a quarter inch off and rounded out the ends of the cut. I don't think that has compromised anything and I wasn't about to lift the engine to change a belt!

In fact, I would have had to disconnect the propshaft and lower the gearbox before I could even lift the engine. My Hi-Gear 5-speed conversion doesn't allow sufficient lift before the box hits the firewall.

I have a full 5-main 1800 in mine and the pulley clears fine. So does the stock water pump and 74-76 yellow plastic fan.

I tried to get that blanking screw out for a while before just having the shop that does my machine work do it.

After removing the pan , oil pick up and easy out the broken thread from the MGB dipsticktube, I was able to remove blanking (blankety blank) screw and saved the very fine thread to accept the Magnette's dipstick tube.
Also, think I'll slide the fan belt on behind the balance before I install, just to play it safe. Thanks for everyone's input.

Hi Phil,

See my earlier response. When you need to change the belt you might wish you had made space to get it past the cross member!
