A Free Tool!
This week I was assembling a spare head to take to GT-35 and had to find a way to compress the valve springs in order to fit the collets. I have never gotten around to buying a proper valve spring compressor (the one I want is $150.)and the guy I borrowed one from at work a year ago has moved on. The local rental shops only sell the little side valve compressors and the cheap ones at the auto parts store are junk (I've tried them)
I scratched my head for a while and came up with the jig shown below. It is made from a 3' length of aluminum channel, an 8" length of 1/4", and my old Workmate.
The threaded rod is dropped through a dog hole in the bench with a nut and fender washer below. It is restrained with a nut and washer above the channel. The channel is adjusted to such an angle that the valve spring is fully compressed with the channel level. There is a 7/8" hole in the channel that the center boss of the spring retainer protrudes through
A small piece of wood is placed on the workmate under the valve to be compressed. Push down on the end of the channel and, while holding the channel down with your elbow slip the collets into place and release. Nothin to it!
A full set of valves can be installed in less than a half hour and the cost was nil as all of the parts were junk on hand. Isn't that nice for a change!

Cheers,
Rich

Rich,
Nicely done! I think this should be given an official part number, and an addendum to the "special tools" section of the workshop manual should be issued to include it.

Sunnen makes a cylinder head repair bench that does basically the same thing for a LOT of $$$$$! The only feature they have that you don't is the ability to quickly rotate the head to any angle. Great work!
