Harald, your VIN # is associated with an MGA 1600, first introduced in May, 1959 (VIN #68851) so your car was probably built in the later part of 1959. You may need to do a bit of investigation to find out how and why it is registered as a 1957. As for the engine number, there should be a metal plate attached to the right side of the engine block, just under the center plugs. Is the plate on the block?

Hi Harald,

could you post a pic of the engine tag ?

The highest number with prefix BP15GB is 23000.

Thanks

Giovanni

Harald, the engine is definitely for a 1500 MGA, but your number does not correlate to the VIN. Could you also post a photo of the tail lights as this may also help identify the base model you have.

Harald, that's a very nice looking MGA you have there, not sure what there is to restore; your car really looks good! Your car's tail lights indicate a 1500 model, yet your VIN # shows it to be a later 1600 series car; could it be your VIN plate was replaced somewhere along the way? The engine number you last provided is "GB15UH-57674"; are you sure that it's not "15GB-U-H 57674"?

The VIN number is also stamped on the right side cross member inside the car. Many times this area can rust out and the number may be illegible, but you can try to see if you can find it. See attached link for more info:

This is a 58 MGA coupe engine tag. Could you post a picture of your tag?
As Nick above noted the numbers start 15GB not GB15

Also the screws that are holding the vin plate are not original. the originals were slotted stove bolts. (screws with nuts)

I think it´s somthing not right with this MGA.
The tag found on the engine had different letters than this.. on your pic the lerrers where reserved in the one taken off my engine was put on from the outside.
I took it off and manage to brake it,but it says GB15UH-57674 when I put the pices together.
This tells me that I have to investigate a bit arround the VIN and Engine number

Hi Harald,

your body# 56071 is for a car with VIN 46124-46435.

You should look at the rail on the passenger site.

Please reassemble the engine tag and take a Picture and post it.

It was also possible to have "non-raised" letters on the tag.

We 're trying to help you find the real history about that car hot smiley

Thanks for all information so far!

I`ll put the pieces together later today and poste a pic.

I found the old title from the US
Here it says MGA 1500- date 01.01.1958 VIN HDR43-46337 - Color: Withe

Engine 15GBUH/36608

I think maybe this is the original Title....
