MGA early/late gauge transition

A friend just picked up Jaeger tach and fuel gauges for an early MGA at a sale. I have an early MGB with Jaeger gauges, but these gauges are different. They use dots instead of lines for the registration marks.

The guy my friend bought them from said they came out of an MGA registered as a '56.

My copy of the Graham Robson book "The MGA, MGB, and MGC" has a photo of a '55 MGA dash with these gauges. Does anyone here know the year or chassis # when they switched to the later gauge like the ones in the early MGB?

My friend will be selling these and wants to know how to describe their application accurately. Might they also work in an early Magnette or?

Thanks,

Rod

I believe the early MGA gauges with the larger numbers were only used for about a year and a half. As far as I know they are all interchangable but I think the newer-style gauges came into play in late '56. Don't quote me though. winking smiley

Per "Original MGA" the new style instruments were introduced at car number 14090 in April 1956.

Those are the later style, used until MGB late 1964.

I'll send a link to this thread to my friend as it will be very helpful for him!

Thanks for the photos Wray. Yours are indeed just like the instruments in my '63/'64 MGB.

Thanks for the date and chassis # David.

Hello from Italy,
I'm new on this forum.
Does anybody have a cross reference table car number V/s Jaeger or Smith's gauges serial/model number for MGA?.
My car is a February 1956 MGA number 12623.
thanks in advance

And I believe the MGA ww cars had different speedos from dw cars due to a slight difference in rear axle ratios.

The only one I could see a marked difference on was the face of the fuel. I have the dash out of a 55 that I'm pretty sure is original. The other gauge is in my 56 which I'm pretty sure is original.

But startin' Monday there'll be no debate
I'll start readin' my Bible, rise early, work late,
Recycle, stay sober, choose love over hate

Thanks for your comments on my jaeger gauges..
In fact speedometer and tachometer on my car are slightly different from those of these pictures.
speedometer dial written numbers are up to 100 (here up to 110)- ref. is 51 116 104 02 - calibration 1450.
tachometer dial written numbers are up to 65 (here up to 70)- ref. is 51 112 103 00.
These two gauges should be original ones (before chassis n. 14090).
fuel gauge is exactly the same as that installed on Wray 1956 car and shown here- ref. is FG 2530/05.
Double gauge is again the same - ref. is GD 1501/01.
these last two should be later ones.
This is what thinks also italian MG expert.
Can anybody confirm this to me?
If I can I would like to have all original model gauges on the car.
This is the reason why I would like to know this.
Thanks to everybody for any help and sorry for my English.

1957 MG MGA "TBA"
All,

I have been wanting to find more information on large numbered MGA gauges (Tach/Speed). I know they were installed to early year MGAs. When I started the restoration on my car, I thought these gauges were from an Austin Healey. I've come to find out other wise.

I would like to validate if they are the true authentic gauges.

Your right the first two guages are the early 1500 guages Marissa. The fuel guage is a post 14090 , 1500 car. Not sure about the double guage, it could be an early or a late, just not sure by what Im looking at in the MGA restoration guide.
