I just got a new Pertronix dizzy for my 1600 engine to replace the warn out Lucas dizzy. In reading the instructions there is mention of a specific coil to use with the new dizzy. I've installed many Pertronix products without experiencing any problems. I just don't remember reading this precaution. Since my coil could be very well 55 years old, replacing the coil might be a good idea. Since the Pertronix coil is not available locally and a Bosch coil is, what Bosch coil should I use?

You can get the Pertronix coil from Summit Racing.

You just need a 3 ohm coil. They recommend you use a pertronix coil but I assume that's a marketing gimmick.

Hello,

I purchased the complete set from Advance Distributor last year. Rebuilt distributor, plug wires and coil. It was a Pertronix coil that failed after 2 months.

He replaced it with a Bosch:

the Bosch Box has a tag on it that reads:

First Line: 00012
Second Line: 9 220 081 083 - 74U

So far so good with the Bosch.

I carry a spare for safety.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Thanks for the input. After some convincing, and hearing "they're all the same", I was able to find the Bosch coil.

BTW I have heard stories about the Pertronix coil being short lived but I don't know of anyone who had any problems with the coil.

To echo, the Bosch coil will work perfectly! A Bosch blue coil works best, an aluminum casing works equally as good.

The Bosch coils need a resistance wire in place of a ballast resistor to work their best. Any un-ballasted 40,000 volt coil works perfectly with the Pertronix module. We've had them in multiple cars, even the 356 Porsche, without a problem and will be using one in a stock '67 289 Ford distributor for the 5.0 engine transplant for the Coupe.

Keeping the original points set-up/rotor/condensor in a plastic bag in the trunk wouldn't be a terrible idea though. The modules are more apt to fail than the coil.

Luck,

T
