Hi,

I'm in the process of rebuilding a 1600 engine and I'm considering putting in a Crane camshaft.
Does anyone have any experience with this one?

F- 222/280- 2- 10 camshaft - MGA- MGB 1598- 1798cc I4 57- 80

SKU: 342-0010 Description
Good idle, daily usage, autocross, also mild supercharged, 2600- 3200 cruise RPM, 9.0 to 10.75 compression ratio advised.

Just looking for some feedback with regards to improvements in driveability, maybe improvement in torque or power compared to a standard camshaft.

Cheers,

Wim

I an extremely intimate with this camshaft. I have installed several of them. I have personally been running this cam in my MGA for 95,000 miles in a couple different engines since early 2000. It is a very nice Fast Street Cam, sort of one step up from stock, very civil and mild mannered. It does indeed have smooth idle down to about 800 rpm. It is just a touch short on torque below 1500 rpm, but you quickly learn not to bog it down at such slow speeds. From 3000 rpm it is very obviously "on can" and pulling strong, and it revs freely to higher engine speed, right past the red line if you have heavy foot. It is definitely not a high strung competition race cam, but it does add some delightful spirit to a daily drive street car. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/power/pp202.htm

I have two comments about this cam.

1: it raises your cranking compression by changing your valave timing. On a stock engine that's a rgeat upgrade, but if you go to, let's say 9.5:1 compression, it will push your cylinder pressures VERY high requiring more than premium fuel.
2: You WILL need to use the highest quality lifters you can find. Its a very hard billet cam and will eat stock-quality lifters. This is the time to upgrade to MGB lifters and pushrods from 1972 or newer.

With all that said, I run one in my Magnette 1800 with very good luck so far (over 10k miles.)

1. A performance cam with increased overlap in valve timing will actually reduce cranking compression pressure reading. The more radical the cam the lower the compression reading.
2. For naturally aspirated engines, performance cams like higher compression ratio. The more radical the cam the higher the compression ratio specified.

Just sticking a cam in an otherwise stock MG engine is a recipe for disappointment. The breathing needs attending to at the same time - whet the engines need most is attention to the heads, after which a cam pays off.
