After working on my car for the past couple of years. I just noticed that the right front fender or wing has an extra hole below the turn signal hole. Making three holes counting the hole where the headlamp goes. Yet my right fender or wing has only two holes counting the headlamp. I figure that the right fender must have been replaced with a later model.

I've PM John Larson and Neil and got pictures from their car. John's fenders are like my right one with two holes. While Neil's is three. Go Figure????? I've got a call into Moss but I'm on their call back list. Plus Moss has only one part number for all years.

Now I'm back paddling to figure out if the dimensions are the same.

And Thank you John and Neil.

LF is a 1600 fender, RF is a 1500 fender. The 'parking' lamps are different.

Thanks Neil.

But are the measurements the same? I just don't want to take the fender off for measuring.

Hi John,

which kind of turn signals do you have? 1500 or 1600 ?
if you have 1600 I could send you the plate that "converts" the 1500 into 1600. See attached pic.

"which kind of turn signals do you have? 1500 or 1600 ?"

The question should be, "Which kind of car do you have?".

I would guess you have a 1500 that has had the left fender replaced with one from a 1600. The reverse could also be true, but what ever the case is, you have fenders from two different models and it's pretty obvious that your left turn signal sits much higher than the right one.

My 1957 1500 was exactly the same as yours, one 1500 fender and one 1600 fender. I first noticed it towing it home - I was wondering why one of the turn signals was significantly higher than the other. As on your car, the turn signal was simply centered over the existing hole. Unfortunately the holes are in different locations which do not line up.

My solution was to cut out the incorrect section, weld it back in smooth then cut the hole out at the correct location. I purchased a replacement backing plate from Todd Clark and tack welded it back in, you can't tell the difference.

Use the dimensions from the hole on the right fender and repair the left one to match. The right one looks to be in the correct position. The left one is too high for the 1500 type lamp. If you were to try the larger 1600 lamp in the LH fender you would find that (due to its' larger diameter) the bottom edge is the same distance distance from the bottom of the fender as the bottom of the smaller 1500 lamp is from the bottom of the RH fender.

That's one good thing about this forum. There are people that have been there before and a lot of people that are very knowledgeable on the MGA's. Thank you.

As I was standing in front of my 1500 and finally spotted the two different. I wonder just why I never saw that before. Then panic and fear set in.

One other thing to note is the headlight mounting is different between the 1500 and 1600. You can't really tell once the trim ring is on, but I'll be replacing the one that came in my 1600 fender.

You and I could have traded fenders and both had a matched set! Of course, one of us would have had 1600 turn signals on our 1500. Yours is a 1500, isn't it?

Larry,

I did notice the headlight being different and my car is a 1500. Trading fenders would have been a lot easier. When I took off the fender I found that the car had been in an accident. The A post was pushed back 3/8 of an inch. So much for the never been hit line.

I also see you have about the same garage space as I have. Mine doesn't have enough space to swing a cat.

Thanks,

John

Neil,

You do some nice work. You probably replaced the lower front panels on the rear wings. How where your replacement panels? I read from others in this forum that from the vender they're not the greatest. I've been looking around for a better dogleg and about the only one that sounds interesting is from Killmartin. Yet I haven't heard anything about how good the will fit. I got an e-mail from the company but $$$$ the price is three times higher.

Oh! by the way The next time I'm in Reading I got to come up and buy you a pint.

The problem with most (all I've seen) doglegs is they are too "flat" the radius of the lower curve is not "round" enough. Easy fix. Just put a few pie cut in the flange and bend the curve smooth and reweld/grind. If this is beyond the skill level of the body worker find another cause this one is too easy. You just match the curve to the front splash plate.

At some point the entire right side of my car had been replaced and the car given a poor respray in a darker blue with no prep. Based on the underlying paint color, mine had both right fenders, the right side door and the bonnet replaced, all from different cars. The hood had at least six colors on it.

I ended up farming out my dogleg repairs. While my self-taught welding skills were adequate for doing the sill replacement, there was too much metal massaging required in the replacement doglegs.

Larry,

I wonder if that dark blue of yours could be the same as a 1955 or 1956 chevy blue? My car was repainted with this color. The PO was proud of this. But the wife told me NO WAY IS THAT CAR GOING TO BE BLUE. When I took off some of the parts the original glacier blue showed. And my wife repeated herself again. I was thinking silver like everyone else. But one of my club member is going to paint his that color. Now I got to figure out another color by July.

I wouldn't have any idea what color the car was painted, it was pretty faded when I got it indicating the repair/repaint was done a long time before I got it. I would have loved to repaint it the orginal Glacier Blue but it's going to be my wife's car and she wanted . . . RED!

Larry,

There's an old saying. "You Marry One" "You Marry All".

Jim,

MMMMmmmmm! Wonder what color your car is or plan to be?
I'm looking for something a little different in the color from the normal.
