Fender piping and water pump

Hi all,

Got a couple of questions for you.

Water pump---who's a good vendor for this?

Fender piping---Your thoughts on this.
Toying with the idea of getting color matched piping instead of the "stock" gray that mgas use. What you think. Has anyone done this?

I have black piping on mine. Whomever did the restoration back in the early 80's put it on. I like it as it matches the interior. I believe it's either VW piping or T-Series.

On the piping question...

I thought that the stuff I got from Moss looked to "Cheapo Hard Plastic" to me. I installed it anyway. While doing the interior I had to put the welting between the dash and the body. Long story - short... I am in the process of ripping out the grey piping and installing tan welting that matches my interior. Front of the car is complete. If you'd like a photo of it let me know and I can snap one this evening.

Also the stuff I used conforms so much better, looks nice and matches the interior to a T.

Take care,
Taylor

Lots of people have gone nonstock piping colours. I'm not a fan - the cars just don't look 'right' but as mods go it is a pretty harmless reversible one, so if you fancy trying, buy some VW plastic piping and have at it.

In addition to the color, keep in mind that this julianos stuff is real piping with round core and round head. Original MGA "piping" is actually a "T" shape, rounded on top and flat on the bottom with low profile and sharp edges. It would have significantly different appearance even if it was the original color.

I would not expect it to hold up as fender piping. The solid plastic piping was original on VW bugs and is available in many colors.

Guys, the only durable piping I can suggest other than original was what they used on the Triumph TR-2, which unlike the TR3 and later, did not have stainless beading. I understand that if you are so inclined and own an airbrush, it takes paint well.

Might want to ask Kelvin about cross sectional shape, as I sold my last TR2 around 25 years ago (swapped it even for a TVR actually) and memory doesn't serve at this chronological remove.

44 years ago I did a "Kids" restoration and used a fender welt that had a polished aluminum bead that I ordered from JC Whitney, it looked great (I was envious of the Triumph metal beads) Hmmm ..... I wonder if Whitney still has it ??! eye popping smiley grinning smiley
