master cylinder.

i was trying to get my mk II running for the first time, but i first have to deal with the fact it is stuck in low gear. both the brake pedal and the clutch pedals were stuck, which led me to the master cylinder. I removed the cylinder and found the inside full of rust. I definitely will attempt a rebuild, but in the meantime can I just take the master cylinder off a parts car (which doesn't seem to be as frozen)?

Also, any suggestions on getting the car unstuck from low gear? b4 trying to turn the engine over, i was able to easily glide the shifter from gear to gear..now it doesn't seem to want to come out of low.

Brakes are kinda important. If you are planning to actually drive this car a used master cylinder seems like a big unknown. If the spare isn't all rusted it would be a good core to rebuild. And if the current master cylinder is rusted how is the rest of the brake system? A car that won't start is a nuisance. A car that won't stop is dangerous.

As for getting it out of gear try rocking the car. If the weight of the car is resting on the gears it can be difficult to shift. Rocking it should take the weight off and allow it to shift. But remember you got no brakes...!

i cant imagine why you would want to do this. maybe get the not so bad one rebuilt or do it your self.

Inspect the parts car unit for pits on the cylinder wall. None allowed! May be able to hone them out, but if the car has been sitting for awhile, probably a stretch. If cylinders are okay, get a rebuild kit like mentioned above (~$12) or have someone do it. It is relatively easy, in and of itself (the rebuild), but lots of diversions possible.

Like stated, not worth the risk. (Most of us know because we probably tried the same or similar thing, however...)smiling smiley

thanks for the advice...i do have to turn my attention to brakes and clutch...i just want so much to hear/see the engine run for psychological reasons...but I hear what you're saying. And thanks for the Rocking advice....she's back in neutral smiling smiley

New master cylinders are cheap. Occasionally Victoria British has them on sale if you have the time.

If the cylinder walls are pitted and will not hone out you can have them sleeved. This is done with either Stainless steel or brass. On mine after checking I decided to go with the brass. I had the luck of choosing Sierra Specialty Automotive in Cal. brakecylinder@Gmail.com . I was going to have him just sleeve the bore and I was going to rebuild it till he told me the price of redoing the whole thing. I couldn't turn him down. He did do a nice job on it.

I had called White Post in Virginia. But after talking to one of the owners I told myself no way. They must be use to all those high rollers out of D.C. who just know how to turn a key. Price was way too much and the guy talked to me like I didn't even know what a master cylinder was. Very high end dollar on all their work.

If a person does a good job and treats me right I let others know. And I was very happy with Sierria. Give the guy a call and talk to him.

I second John's recommendation. Sierra Specialty rebuilt my MGA tandem master cylinder with bronze sleeves about 2 years ago. I've had no problems. Reasonable price. Fast service. And it helps support the California economy... don't get me started.
