For those into XBOX games, finally the creators of Forza4 have released an MGA Twin Cam.
For a long while they have released US muscle car but recently they have released british convertible cars.
To race against the A there is a Healey 3000.

Not sure I'd say 'elegant', but certainly a handsome shape. If it had looked like a Daimler SP250 it would have promptly disappeared into the forgotten hordes of wannabe BMC models.

Anyone remember the Austin A90 Atlantic.....

Any self respecting MGA fan should loath anything put out by Donald Healey. Because of him we got the MGA 3 years late and had to put up with the TF. Selfish arrogant SOB that he was. The MGA is such a clean and pretty car while the Healey is just clunky and fat. Kind of like Cinderella and her step sisters.
Here is a picture of the 52 MGA that we never got BECAUSE of Healey and the influence he had on the idiots at the top of BMC.

Don't care much for the hood or the front valance... but is the windscreen tilted more than normal (or is it just the photo angle)?

i have had both and i liked both, the "Handsome Brute" is the name of one of the books on Healeys. the real issue with the healey is the weak frame and poor frame design, the poor folding top mechanism on roadsters and the way the galvanic action ate away at the dissimilar metals. its power was fun and the jump seats let me put the young ones in for the ride, and Healey Blue is a magnificent color and i love hood scoops. i would buy another one in a heart beat if i could find an affordable one. i also had a 54 tf and i liked that also that was more of a go kart by todays standards. having said all that i also like MGAs and thats why i am on my second one. my kids like the Healey also just look at thier faces

Well I have to say I think they look fantastic. A bit more of a handful than an MGA, but a long distance tourer for sure. Almost twice the market value compared to an MGA, definitely not twice the fun! But I suppose that argument is weak or the Midget would be tops!

The Healeys definitely look great, which is why they sold and continue to hold value.

That aside, the technical spec was wanting in some areas. Designed with a chassis that went under the rear end (except for the very last Mk 3 cars) which limited axle travel and hindered handling, and built with a method of many spot welds attaching inner sheet metal to the frame itself, they are a horror show when they rust and very expensive to restore.

I've owned a couple (prefer the older 4 cylinder version aesthetically) but in the end the looks weren't enough for me to put up with the other quirks and I just prefer the MGA shape and more sensible technical lay out.

i am shocked ...are you saying the flying open door trick is a quirk? as opposed to an admireable trait,

The Healey was a poorly designed car. It was forced through by inter company politics over what proved to be a much better car. Healey was afraid the MG would out sell and over shadow his brute. Even with a 3 year head start and a 5 year longer run his fears proved true. The MGA became the first sports car to sell over 100,000 units. Healeys are more costly today BECAUSE of their meager success in the market place. There are so few that they have become more valuable. There are many reasons that the MGA has become the most collectible and restorable car of all the LBCs.
Petty rivalries, inter office jealousy, and over all poor upper management of BMC is what effectively killed off all the classic marques. Donald Healey is the poster child for everything that was wrong at BMC. No I do not think I was TOO harsh, I think I was being quite restrained in my disdain for everything Healey.
While MG struggled to sell only 9600 MG TFs they were saddled with Healey sold almost 15000 100s. Once BMC pulled their collective heads out MG went on to sell 200,000 As and Bs while Healey could only muster less than 60,000 units.
A lot of people like old cars of any sort and that is great. Some of us are a bit more monogamous in our love of MGAs. Triumph was a worthy and respected competitor, Healey was a nasty step sister, selfish, bitter and whiny, crying to management to the whole companies loss. (very much the bad side of the MGA Cinderella story)

Bob - my MGA race car also exhibited the flying open door trick under braking, which quickly resulted in a rubber door strap getting installed before I got black flagged for illegal use of air brakes.

Randy, I don't really see Donald Healey as the antiChrist. He was a reasonably successful businessman that quite understandably had trouble functioning among the unions and politics of BMC and he also quite rightly turned down the wrong headed request to stick an AH badge on the hapless MGC (and I say that as an owner). He went on to an interesting connection with Jensen's Jensen Healey project (which almost bankrupted the company).

The big Healeys and their designer's influences in BMC weren't nearly as disastrous, IMHO, as the merger with Standard Triumph was - resulting in the stagnation of the MGB design and the removal of the MGB GT from the playing field in favour of that rubber lipped door stop abortion they replaced the TR-6 with.

I've never had any problem owning automotive ugliness - or at least cars with unconventional looks!
