MGA Ideas

Posted by David Pyle

Now that I have the photo sizing figured out here are four (unoriginal) ideas for those who have cars they actually drive...

• Removable (Moss) rear view mirror. Remove it (easily) if you need to put up the window. Inexpensive.

• Removable and adjustable sun visor. Attaches with velcro to top bar when top is up. Cheap at your auto supply.

• GPS. Shows speed, trip calculations and let's the wrecker know where you are. My speedometer is inaccurate.

• Knob start. Someone's idea brilliantly executed. Label on knob reads "turn". Fools the thieves.

Did you wire in an outlet to plug the GPS in or do you just run it off of battery power?
TX, USA   usa
No outlet in the MG. GPS battery is good for about 2 hours. Whole assembly can be used in another car with an outlet, or can be removed from the mount and charged through a computer USB port, or wall outlet with the proper connection. And of course it can be used to navigate to the great unknown...so when you get there it not unknown.

I use a gps in my car but it is plugged into an outlet. The problem is in bright sunlight it is impossible to see clearly on the top of the dash. A better location is under the dash behind the gearshift on some kind of base.

Good idea. Comes with a base for that. Has to be able to "see" the satellites.

I couldn't get mine to "see" the satellites when on the tunnel, behind the shifter. I had to use my hand as a sunshield any time I wanted to read the GPS. Even then it was iffy.

I chose not to mark my "keyknob"...just let 'em look. Younger people look all over the steering column for the ignition lock.

That is so full of awesome I don't know where to begin, except, where can I get a blank like that?!? grinning smiley

How'd you make it?

Bob,

Yours is cool. Mine is a big ugly white knob I had for another purpose and slit the base to accept the key. Then I painted it and that didn't turn out very well. The word TURN is on the knob to show me the difference between 'on and off' should I forget. I have senior moments like that.

Gary,

Those are very creative and useful ideas. Is the R/V mirror adapted of one commercially available. If so, from whom? The brake light over the license is a great idea too. My car is a bit bouncy for a full cup...

The mirror was from Europa Spares in the UK. Page 2 of 7, model JH950. I cut the mount down so it attaches with one of the original windshield side post screws. It clears the side curtains and gives a great view of the road..
You can probably find them here somewhere.

Making the "Key Knob" is easy. I used a map light knob 'cause it's blank. Grind the shank of an ignition key down to a narrow bit until it just fits into the hole in the knob. A dab of epoxy or Super Glue holds it all together nicely.

The secret is out. Oh, for a grinder.

Or you can use a file and lots of patience. Those key blanks are pretty soft.
