Fan Shroud #1

Always looking for advice. Just received a fan shroud from Moss. ($48.95 plus shipping)

Had no idea until it arrived that installation requires removal of the radiator and once installed tightening the alternator belt is difficult. Actually my cooling system is quite new and works pretty well. So the question is for those who have installed the fan shroud is it worth the work. My MG guru will do it if I sweet talk him.

It helps when standing or driving at very slow speed in hot weather. Not much difference at normal road speed.

If you're going to drive it in town during the hot season in Texas (i.e., April through October), I'd say it's worth it. Removing the radiator is one of the few jobs I've done that turned out easier than I thought. My only complaint was that I couldn't center the shroud very well (the lower radiator hose prevented me from lowering it as much as I'd like to), and the fan can lightly rub it in certain conditions.

Mine fit just fine with no alterations needed. Stock 1500 coupe. I did re-adjust by loosening the bolts slightly at each side once it had heated up and cooled a few times, but no rubs.

1974.5 MBG Tourer with Weber 32/36 mod and AC.

The prior owner of my car indicated that he had a problem with overheating and was running with Water Wetter.

So I bought the radiator shroud. I had no problems with installation - no trimming of the shroud. I did not remove the radiator to install. I only unbolted it, slid it forward about an inch, slid in the shroud and re-installed the 6 radiator bolts. I can't remember, but I may have also loosened the air ducts. It's about a 30 minute easy job. I have not had any overheating problem with the shroud in place and have had no need to use the Water Wetter.

You may want to check to make sure your fan is not installed backwards. It's very hard to tell because it looks the same both ways. I think Barney posted a picture and maybe has one on his site. Mine was reversed. Putting it on correctly moves the fan about 1/2 inch closer to the radiator and the fan and radiator are then in very close proximity to each other.
