Windshield Problem #1

My Winshield is not fitting right. Before restoration it was ok. The gaps are not right between the defroster vents. Pass side farther away, driver side closer. grab handle fits good on pass side and is 1/4 inch away on drivers. Windshield is lower on pass side and higher on drivers. Top fits ok.

Seems like the WS is higher on drivers side and lower on pass side and closer to the driver on the drivers side and farther away on pass side. So it is skewed if you will. I have attached some pictures to look at. The hole in the channel for the post are not lining up as well. We did nothing to those during restoration.

Any ideas......

Bruce... I'm sure you've already tried this, but what if you leave everything loose (especially the side supports) and try to shift the windscreen towards the passenger side. The curve should shift away from the defrost vent on the passenger side and shift closer to the drivers side.

Basically just evening the gap out. Mine is about a 1/4 inch all the way across but the rubber gasket (flap) hides that. I also have about a 1/2 between the defrost vent and the windshield on both sides.

During restoration work, did anyone tamper with position of the WS stake pockets? You might get that effect if the left side pocket was inclined too far back. For reference, try removing the left side grab handle to see if the WS will push down to proper height, then measure the post angle on left and right sides.

IIRC, there is some play in the fastenings on both sides for the windshield posts.

I would loosen all the fasteners and push/shove everything into alignment, then carefully re-tighten.

One other thing - the fenders also have some play fore and aft, and you might want to check that the opening on the fender (wing) is not too far back on one side, for example, preventing you from pushing the window mounting post far enough to the vertical. To fix, you'd have to loosen the wing mounting bolts all along that side.

If your top in installed, it probably won't work now - the top of the windshield is likely too far back on one side.

Remember that there are packing pieces that go around the windshield posts in the stake pockets, and another set under the grab handles. If you didn't put them in under the grab handle, and then tightened one grab handle down, that might make the other side pull away as you twisted the windshield. The grab handles themselves also have a little play, so leave the three fasteners at the mounting post side loose until you fasten it to the car at the bottom.

I had some concerns about this too so I mounted doors, wings (fenders) and sidescreens in order to weld the screen pockets in the right place. I have several sets of old factory sidescreens and I was quite surprised at the variation between them (caused by twisting and retrimming over the years I guess.

Bruce,
Because the stakes are at an angle the further down the screen goes the further forward it goes. Try to get the gap under the frame equalised and see what the lateral alignment looks like.
Also have a look down the drivers side stake pocket and see if there is anything preventing the stake from going all the way down.
