Classic scam. Probably from Nigeria...

The scam is that the bank check they send is fake, but it takes your bank a couple of weeks to figure that out. So they then snatch the money back out of your account. Yes, they can do that, even after the money shows up in your account in a couple of days and you think the check has "cleared." By then the buyer has your stuff and you have a worthless "bank check" to hang on your wall...

It's so common it may not even be worth reporting...

Dick

Yep--just write back and say "no pickup until funds have cleared--probably 10 days to two weeks". That will be the end of that conversation.

Just tell them to have the agent show up with cash in hand. That will be the end of it.

Just tell them it's cash at time of pick up and they go away.

78 MGB - Done right by a good PO, and I only bought it. Tell Jim how nice it is. But I did put in a Datsun 5 speed.

53 TD Mark II - a work in progress.

This car is now very nearly completely done. Sure to find something else, but not now.........

Yes there is no such thing as certified funds anymore. My friend sold his Healey on EBay to someone overseas and he set up a new bank account, deposited the certified check, closed the account after taking the money out then allowed the car to be picked up. It's a shame it has gotten the way it has.

Never accept a paper document (check) from someone overseas.

Banks can wire international payments that are secure and safe.

As to the comment of opening then closing a bank account after withdrawing a cleared check, well that is just a fool's way of thinking that one has beaten the system and is free and clear of any liability.
