Cannot fill fuel tank

I suggest you get on your knees and look at the bottom of your gas tank. I had a similar problem until I noticed my tank had collapsed upward like an accordian. Seems as though the blocking of vent tube had caused a situation that the fuel being used in the tank was not being replaced by air. Once the car stalled like it was out of gas, and I opened the cap only to hear a rushing of air into the filler neck did I realize what had happened. Cleared the vent tube and pumped air into tank to expand it back to original shape. I used a portable inflator, a rubber stopper with a hole in it. Problem solved. I did have to replace my fuel sender unit, as old unit got damaged when tank collapsed.
I drove about 2 months with inaccurate fuel gage reading.
