fuel pump repair

Hi,
Finally started working on my B.
Today took off the fuel pump for repair.
Is there an article that can guide me?

there is a formula....parts req X time to repair = more than replacement.
fuel pump about 89 bucks and 20 min to install. I am facious of course but these little parts are not worth messing with unless you rebuild them as a profession.

I don't rebuild fuel pumps. One they aren't expensive, and two they are very critical for getting from point A to B. Do youself a favor and replace it with the SU electronic pump. Little more money but worth it.

We installed electronic S. U. pumps on both cars and it gives me peace of mind. If your on this board long enough you will find that one of the most common problems is the fuel pump.

All of the pumps here will work fine in your MG and they won't cost you an arm & a leg.

I can't tell you HOW MANY fauset fuel pumps I have replaced(that's what in that piv) with in a couple of years after the customer put them in. More times than not they threw away all the hardware for the SU so I had to replace everything. Don't EVEN buy that piece of JUNK. Get an SU and be done with it fo 15-20 years.

Ram - The procedure in the shop manual or a Haynes manual is about as good as anything available for the rebuilding process. I have put together a short write up with pictures, based on the Burlen Fuel Systems (makers of all things SU) that details the adjustment process that I will send to you if you e-mail me. Most of the time a SU fuel pump that is in need of rebuilding has a burned out swamping resistor that is internal in the coil. Once that swamping resistor is burned out, it makes renewal of the points an exercise in futility as the resistor is part of the arc suppression circuit and without it, the new points burn very rapidly due to arcing. A new pump is usually a better answer than a amateur rebuild and will last many years whether points style or all electronic. I would recommend the all electronic pump or my restoration and conversion to solid state if your car is not driven regularly through out the year since long periods of inactivity will allow the points in the points style pump to film over and fail to start the next time the brought out of hibernation. If the car is driven regularly, the film is burned off of the points and problems don't develop. If the car is laid up each winter, I would recommend either the all electronic pump or my solid state conversion as they do away with the points completely. I further recommend a permanently installed back up fuel pump be installed in line with the primary pump and power to both pumps supplied via a single pole, double throw switch. A dissenting opinion. ;^)

While it is true that it is probably cheaper, easier and more reliable to simply buy a new/rebuilt pump, that is also true about MGBs. Why bother when you can pick up a slightly used Miata for about the same cost?

The answer, of course, is that there is a certain passion in caring for, tinkering with and driving these endearing little cars. Part of the satisfaction is in rebuilding alternators, starters and fuel pumps - just like mechanics would have done in when these cars were in their prime.

So, if time and economics matters most, then I couldn't agree more with the posters who say to replace the pump and be done with it. If you enjoy taking things apart and understanding how they work, then rest assured that it is entirely possible for an amateur to do an excellent rebuild of an SU fuel pump. They are an elegantly simple design and don't have many moving parts. The trickiest bit is in setting the "throw" on the points. The only real obstacle you will face is that a few of the parts that are available to rebuilders (such as the little reed valves) seem to be unobtainable in small quantities. Fortunately these parts do not break very often.

Exactly Terry, like I said a fuel pump is very important to get you from A to B. Replace it and be done with it. If you don't get it 100% right you will be on the side of the road during rush hour wishing you had replaced it with a solid state unit.

Hi, and thank you all for the information.
As I live in Israel, buying a new or a rebuild pump is a little more complicated. I have to order it from the USA or Europe, so it will cost more (delivery) and will take much longer.
I'm new to this technical thing (as a matter of fact, the pump was the first thing I took off myself...). It will feel good if I succedd fixing the pump, and I will give it a try, before ordering a new one (thanks Terry).
However, without a diagram I'll be lost. If anyone has one, I'll be grateful.

Just go to napa and buy electronic pump of the day. No sense in going overboard but you can get one for 50 bucks or less and you will never never have to file breaker points again.

(Even I don't usually bother with slave cylinders - no sense being a fanatic!)
